No separate speaker and headphone volume anymore

    Hi,

I recently got a Clevo laptop (from Origin PC), which has Realtek audio drivers.

To try and fix some BSOD problems, i did a repair install of Windows and uninstalled/reinstalled lots of drivers (using the original driver installers provided by Origin).
But now i don't have separate volume for when the headphones are plugged in. Instead, the volume remains the same as when they are unplugged.

I set Realtek HD Audio Manager to have separate jacks (not "tie up" all inputs), but that did nothing.

When that manager app is running, it pops up a tray notification whenever the headphone is plugged or unplugged, so i know it knows when it's plugged in. However, those notifications are annoying as hell, so i don't run that app always. Besides, i never saw the notifications back when the volume was working.

I looked at the sound window from Windows control panel, and it lists the speakers and something else (digital audio, perhaps? i think it's the optic output), but no headphones. I'm not sure if it has always been that way.

By the way, i should point out that the headphones still work, and sound is not output from the speakers when they are plugged in. I just can't control the volume separately.

I can get more details when i get home. But has anyone else had this same problem, or know how to fix it?

    Thanks

It would help if we knew what version of Windows you're running. Vista and later don't have the mixer that XP has.

Any ideas? Note that unlike many other similar issues found on the web, my headphones do actually work. This problem is just about the volume. And i didn't have this problem before.

And by the way, I strongly believe that this problem is solvable without having to resort to a complete system restore. It would have to be just a config file or driver version or something that i need to change.

In the Realtek HD Audio manager, with the headphones plugged in, does unchecking headphone virtualization solve the problem? It seems to me that leaving that checked would link the two volume controls.

    • Click on Device advanced settings and under Playback Device, select "Make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously". You should now have a separate volume control when you plug in headphones.
    • To hide the popup notification, click the arrow next to the tray, click Customize and set Realtek HD to Hide icon and notifications.

No, that doesn't do anything. If anything, i'd have thought that the "Separate all input jacks as independent input devices" options would have done it, but that doesn't work either.

I do not have that option in the "Device advanced settings" dialog.
I've also seen suggestions to "Disable front panel jack detection" in Realtek HD Audio Manager. However, i do not see that option either.
    This is all i have:

Come to thing of it, the only options there are for recording devices. So of course the "Separate all input jacks" option wouldn't help. But why then are there no options for output?

Thanks, i figured that out a while ago. Good thing too, i couldn't stand that thing popping up every time. Why does it have to tell you that you just did something you know you did :confused.

I'm still having this problem. I haven't been doing much research on it lately, but it still annoys me. And from looking at other forums it affects other people too. Surely someone has figured out the solution, especially since i know it can work.

What connector options do you have if you click on the folder icon that is directly below Device Advanced Settings?
When you plug in the headphones, if you double click on the black button below 'Back Panel', is headphones detected as the current connected device?

Apart from that, the only other thing I can think of is that the you had an earlier/later Realtek installation to the one provided by Origin. Unfortunately, Realtek don't seem to maintain any sort of changelog, so all I could advise is to make sure you have your original installer and then try updating.

    Hi guys,

Just thought i'd post back to say that i've finally found a solution!
After doing a bit more googling, i came across this post. The solution there is simple and effective - uninstall Realtek. I don't know why i didn't try it before. Who needs that bloated software when Window's default driver works even better.
