    Greeting Geekathonians!
I'm hoping someone can help me avoid hosing this computer down:

This Vaio I'm fixing no longer has any services running. In fact, services.msc is empty!!! Services are still listed properly under msconfig, but are stopped. I tried to restart them, but no dice. Active Desktop is dead as well as my task bar. Programs (like AIM) will STILL load at startup, though. IE6 can't get online (page cannot be reached), but AIM and FireFox have no problem.

This all started after I ran Spybot and got rid of some rather annoying spyware. After getting rid of them, his computer would fail to load XP. I used an Ultimate Boot CD to run a CHKDSK to fix the problem and found thousands of index and security permission errors. He also STILL has a few viruses on his computer, but I'm working on tackling that issue with a bootable McAfee antivirus program I have.

Any ideas on how to get the services back up and running WITHOUT doing a fresh install?

    ***UPDATE***
Running a repair from the Windows Install Disc got my services back up and running... kinda

    Now, I have a slightly different problem(s):
    -Active Desktop is not working
-network adapters are not showing up in "Network Connections," but they ARE showing up in Device Drivers. In they Event Viewer, under System, I see an "Error" in DHCP with an EVENTID of 1001
-"The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched." Shows up when I try to load new drivers from the VAIO website.
-Application Event error found with COM+. EVENT ID: 4609. (Something about "Bad internal Processing")

I hope this isn't scaring anyone off...

    ***UPDATE 2***
OK, it looks as though the problem with my network connection stemms from that initial spyware problem. After looking at this support site, I was able to use a set of command-line...err.... commands to reinitialize my ethernet port.

As an aside, I'm not sure if this was the ENTIRE solution since I had reinstalled IE7 and run a program called WinsockXPFix before trying this trick. And this has ONLY worked on connections that I went and uninstalled the drivers for PRIOR to running the tip (though they are now labled connections 4 & 5. I only uninstalled 2 of the three I had.) Also, while this DID get said computer back on my network, I still cannot see the adapters anywhere other than in IPCONFIG.

This brings me to the next leg of my problem... Updating and Installing. It appears that "The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. Access Denied." Support sites lead me to the conclusion that dcomcnfg is the culprit. I Start -> Run -> "dcomcnfg" and I can get into it properly; however, when I click on Component Services, the window dissappears.
    Any ideas?

    ***UPDATE 3***
OK, I think I found my silver bullet for this issue. The problem is that it is now buried in a ton of junk from M$. The Event ID: 4069 listed above relates to this issue. GREAT!!! WONDERFUL!!!
The problem is that this looks like a lot of BS with a distinct lack of bull.
Anyone out there who is familiar with this stuff?
