I recently performed a desctructive restore on my packard bell laptop. I then installed xp pro where as it used to be xp home that was used previously. Everything seems fine apart from me not getting any sound at all. when i attempt to play songs in WMP, i get the following message error details...

    There is no sound card
You either do not have a sound card installed on your computer or it is not functioning properly. If you do not have a sound card installed, you must install one before you can listen to audio in a digital media file. If you do have a sound card installed, refer to its documentation to troubleshoot the problem.

    Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

I downloaded belarc advisor and under multimedia where there should be some sort of sound card or something, it tells me there is none detected.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do? it must have been something to do with my restore but it really should keep my sound intact.

    thanks

If you will give model number of laptop, maybe we can chase the driver down for you. ed

I don't have it to hand at the moment but I'm positive that it's the Packard Bell Easynote C3 series.

I actually found this interesting link. http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=platform_K1&g=2000

Could someone look at that and let me know if there is anything that i should be looking to download. Bearing in mind that my system is telling me it does not recognise any sound devices and cannot play sound.
    Cheers

Before we start chasing drivers, have you ever heard sound on the pc before? ed

Yes. Before desctructive recovery, i was able to hear sound whether it'd be from WMP, real player, IE, moxilla etc. It's only since I've installed xp pro (when it was previously xp home) that it's not detecting any sound capability.

Ramage: I checked the link provided above and you should download the second file listed under sound drivers. The first choice is called a 'suite' meaning that it's a bloated driver; full of extra junk that you don't need. Just download and install the basic driver and you should have sound... if not, re-post and let me know what's up.....
    GOOD LUCK
