Hi this is my first time on this support forum & I need a little bit of help.

My friend gave me his pc to help get the sound working because he does not have a internet connection to ask for help.

I don't know what happened but there is no sound other than the beeps from the computer when it turns on.

I did try install AC97 from realtek but it gets like half way then the PC crashes to a blue screen and the following shows up.

I only wrote down the error codes because the rest was just telling me that my PC has crashed.

    Technical information :

    STOP: 0x0000007E ( 0xC0000005, 0xF334646D, 0xF7B3EA74, 0xF7B3E770 )

    port.sys - Address
    F334646D base at F3346000, DataStamp 41107F13

I have attached a report from Everest on my Computers information it might be long because I selected it to make a report on everything as I don't know what you might need.

Any help on this I would appreciate.

AC97 drivers are outdated and have not been updated in 3 years and will most likely never be as the new drivers (Realtek High Definition Audio) took their place:

    For Windows 2000, XP, 2003:

    Vista or Windows 7:

Be sure any sound drivers already installed are removed first. You MIGHT need motherboard drivers as well but see if these work first.

I uninstalled anything in the Add/Remove list that said Audio Drives there was just one and then installed the one you gave me but it still have so sound.

Also my windows media player does not work if I download a new version and install it would that fix the sound problem because for now Im trying music on Media player classic to see if anything has sound.

Nope, wont help. Need computer specs to see what you have. Does the audio now show up and working before we go there? Sometimes its ssimply not plugged in right or the card is looking for it on a different output.

You have to use this tool to uninstall the old drivers correctly

before you are installing the new one , run this !! :wave

in normal mode - reboot your machine
in safe mode - reboot your machine

AGAIN, this is bad advice. You not only do NOT need this, the Realtek drivers now scan and remove the old drivers for you. If you want to step on other people helping, at least know what your talking about, otherwise, help somwhere where someone NEEDS help.

The speaker on the task bar shows up and it does not have a cross through it I also checked that everything was not set to mute.

Even when I connect speakers and check Sound & Audio in the Control Panel is has listed there "VIA Audio ( WAVE)" this is also in all the drop downs on the other tabs.

I attached a text document that everest made from the specs of the computer I hope thats what you wanted.

I'm not sure but before that "VIA Audio (WAVE ) thing was not there for a wile and during that time even when I put my speakers in the computer would say Nothing was connected but then after rebooting the PC that "VIA Audio (WAVE ) thing came back.

If there is anything else you need please let me know.

The drivers I sent you to should work. I suspect you have a failing sound card.

There was never a need for a sound card in the pc before all there is are 2 sets of USB cards ( they have 4 usb ports on them ) and an ethernet card.

Could it be that the motherboard is faulty ?

Please see if the ViaAC97 driver will work for you. I have seen where sometimes the Realtek drivers do not work on the Via chips. But, as the Major says, it is probably a hardware problem relating to your motherboard sound chip. And by the way, I would update to SP3 because you are no longer getting security updates.

Well we have http://www.majorgeeks.com/VIA_AC97_Vinyl_Audio_driver_d4505.html and http://www.majorgeeks.com/VIA_Audio_Drivers_Pack_d2350.html but I gave him the link VIA provides to auto detect his card because he does not have enough info on his sound card to keep trying different ones over and over. Were on the same page, I just took an easier road for him.

Link back to us for downloads when you can, that's what we do.

Don't really want to "butt in" but has the OP checked that he has the MS UAA driver installed as he is still at SP2 !! also maybe that he needs to install the chipset driver first before installing the audio driver. :major

As tgell also said, I agree, you MUST be up to date on Windows Updates before procedding.

Sorry about that Major, I did not think MajorGeeks had the VIA download. I should have checked. :-o

Major I downloaded and installed the file from the first link but that never worked.

tgell I also tried the link you gave me but it also never worked although the "VIA Audio (WAVE )" in sound & Audio did change after I installed it.

There will probably be a lot of downloads is I update the pc because its quite old, will it take a lot of my bandwith because I have a small cap.

Would just buying a cheapish sound card be easier ?
