have win xp home, sp2. machine is compaq presario, model 5400US. sound device is on motherboard, OEM, software is Soundmax by Analog. When i boot, there is no sound. under sound devices in control panel, says no audio device. in device manager-sound, soundmax is there, saying that it is working properly. If i uninstall the driver there, then reboot, windows says it has found a new device, and can I help? i say sure, and it then finds the soundmax drivers, and i have sound...until i reboot, and it drops out again. any suggestions?

Also, as a follow up, BIOS has the onboard sound enabled, also i have uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, with no effect.

Disable the onboard sound ....it's taking precedence over the card.
