I went to the Gigabyte site and downloaded the recommended driver but each time I tried to install it it gets almost to the end and then crashes the computer and restarts it. Having looked through previous posts I have tried to resolve it but to no avail. In 'sounds and audio devices' in control panel I have no audio driver (no surprise) and everything is greyed out. When installing the driver I get an unsigned driver message and the info that came with the driver says to ignore that and continue. Is it possible that my anti virus is the problem? To say that this is driving (no pun intended) me mad is an understatement as I have now been trying for a week. Any brilliant suggestions?

Did you do a complete format and re-install of WinXP? If so, then you should have more than the amount of HD free than is being reported by Everest.

Wow! What a speedy response, thank you. :wave

The re-install was done a couple of weeks ago and since then I have been putting back a number of the programs that disappeared. Not sure if it was a complete reformat as it was a friend of mine who did it but I think not.

Here are all the drivers for your MB. I would suggest that you do a COMPLETE reformat of the drive and install Windows all over again so that you're not taking up such a large amount of HD space.

Save all the drivers to a CD, then you don't have to download them again.

Although I had tried these before I gave it aother go, here is what happened. Downloaded the SiS7012 file to my second drive, expanded it and ran setup. Just after the SiS screen I got an error message -536870397. Pressed 'ok' and it gave another error box 'failed to install audio driver for windows xp. Setup will exit.' And it did!!

Next had a go with the AC'97 driver. Downloaded to second drive, ran setup, system crashed!!

Sounds and audio device properties still says I have no audio device.

In sound, video and game controllers I now have a multi media audio controller with an exclamation mark in a yellow circle. Still no sound.

This is the 'read me file' from the download:

    Hi

What Service Pack is your Windows XP at? can use this HERE to find out if you cannot easily find out.

Also in Device Manager what devices have any yellow ! marks by them?

The rough guess by me is that you need to have your Windows XP at latest Service Pack (SP3) then install the Chipset drivers for your PC model and reboot then install the Audio drivers and reboot and test.
