No sound after reinstalling Win XP

As a follow on from my previous moan - having to reinstall win XP, resulting in no graphics driver - I've just discovered I have no sound - ie watching Youtube or anything, no sound and no volume control. (If I go to change system volume, the controls are grey).

I used to have sound before the reinstall - though no external speakers either then or now - and I still get beeps from the computer so there is some output there. I guess this means a missing driver again? But Ive been on the Dell site and downloaded Dell Driver analyzer utility - (doesnt seem to do anything) and tried downloading the Analog Devices driver (wont download). Any ideas?

Can you post your computer model Dell ????.

Yeah sounds like you need a sound driver, should be on the support page of your computer at the Dell website under drivers, audio but post your model and if it exists we'll find it.;)

Optiplex GX260. I assume it has the standard chipset for sound, as it did with the graphics, rather than a seperate card

Come on y'all, it's a Dell. They make multiple configurations under one model heading. Run the Service Tag on the Support link of the site for the exact drivers needed.

If you don't run the service tag, it could lead to headaches.

Y'all?:-D I checked there are two models GX260 and GX260n,both have the adi198x audio chipset and require the same driver.

I agree though a service tag will provide a more accurate match.

Yeah, I know you can get away without it, but I've also learned over the years that Dell likes to do things to annoy even the most patient geek. I always run it, just in case.

There was an Inspiron series with a P4 CPU years ago that everything was literally backwards on, and the case was useless except for Dell's custom board. Personally, I cried "foul" over selling a dead end case to your customer, but it is their product...

I agree, though with the problems I have every time I try and do anything on a computer, I would say every firm involved in IT in every respect does things just to annoy.

How hard can it be to just reinstall an OS and expect things to work? Weeks now and although I have (finally) graphics working and (finally) keyboard, I still have no sound and am still trying to install garbage and drivers and software that just doesnt work. Cant get my scanner to communicate with the PC and that seems to be Canons fault - THEIR OWN drivers from their own site dont work either but thats another story... :cry

Oh yeah and if anyone can tell me what a service tag is, where I find it and what you do with it, that might help me as well, cheers

Have you updated windows? Update including all the latest service packs,if you don't know go control panel, windows update view installed updates and look for the date of the latest update or service pack.

The error is a problem with installshield wizard, looks like the version used in the driver is too old or too new, this doesn't mean it's the wrong driver but definitely update windows then try the driver again.

Go to control panel, system, device manager and look for your audio device probably under sound and video game controllers it should have a yellow exclamation mark next to it a driver not installed error code 28,can you confirm this? This is important to make sure a driver hasn't already been installed.

At this juncture you can just click update driver but we don't usually recommend this as it can cause driver match problems but if your frustrated or want a quick fix you may want to try it and let windows search for a driver on the net.

The service tag is usually written on sticker somewhere on the computer, one of the problems is these sticker especially on a computer that's 10 years old is that they fade or get removed.

    Here

    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=267748

You can try this driver too, which is the generic driver for that chipset.

If none of these solutions bare fruit there are a couple more things we can try.

First download and install this program, create a system report of your computer and attach with your next post, this will provide a lot more info which will help us identify your motherboard, chipset and soundcard.

The service tag is on the label attached to the bottom of a laptop.
On a desktop, it can be on the side, the back, or the bottom of the tower.

I've been using these SP2 / SP3 files for a while after a re-install. Just burn the files to a CD, and pop it in. The nice thing is you can get the PC almost fully updated offline after an re-image. Most of my discs are SP2, one is not.

    SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28

    SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Even though it directs you to the Windows Update site for just one computer, using this is just plain easier than screwing around with adding sites to the "safe list" so the process doesn't "throw a shoe" (0x error), and worrying about ActiveX objects.

These streamline things very nicely, and then you only have to worry about less than 100 updates all said and done.

If you have the original OS installed on your GX260, open this link on Internet Explorer, and it will tell you the Service Tag.

You can also find the Service Tag in the BIOS, as well as on the top of your GX260 tower.

Thanks for all this. In summary, there is no audio driver; if I go to Control Panel / Sounds & Audio, I get 'no audio device'.

If I try that generic driver, I get error message 'HDA Audio Bus Driver is required & not found'

I have installed Speccy; but I dont know how to do a system report using it? I just get a lot of info about my machine. NB Speccy says 'No audio card detected' but I expected that; the sound seems to be in the chipset.

If you can tell me what you need from speccy I can post it?

    No audio card detected? Strange.

Do this, hit del as the computer is booting to enter bios.

Navigate to onboard devices or integrated peripherals, look for a device named audio controller or ac97,onboard audio.

Make sure it's set to enabled, not auto or disabled.

Make sure you don't have any other sound card installed in your system in the pci slots.

Can you post what devices you have installed in device manager. Go to control panel-system-device manager-sound and video game controllers, expand by double clicking it.

Hitting Del on boot doesnt do anything but F2 takes me to setup. If I then go to Integrated Devices, no mention of ac97 or 'onboard audio', but 'sound' is set to On and so is 'PC speaker'. There is definitely nothing in the PCI slots.

In Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers, I have Audio Codecs (Device Status - 'this device is working properly')

There is also Media Control Devices, Legacy Audio Drivers, Video Codecs

Have you found your service tag yet following the guides, either manually or using the link.

To run speccy install the program, let it analyse everything then click file, save snapshot to text to somewhere you can find it then attach with your next post.

Found the service tag label, its sort of half there, half ripped off. I still dont know what to do with it though? I can make out some numbers and what looks like half a windows key; but my OS is not original and is loaded from a disk anyway? Which I have the key for, its an original MS disk.

Have attached a speccy snapshot (txt) to this reply

Cheers for all this help I am way out my depth here :confused

when the process is finished you must restart your machine

afterwards you must download the Display driver (repeating the previews process during installation like the audio driver ) you must restart your machine , i hope to solved your problem my friend :wave
