no sound audio or computer system sound

I have a Dell 8200 dimension, Pentium 4, 2.40 ghz xp 2002 edition(service pack 3). I have a sound blaster sound card. I also have 2 disk drives. No sound either using system sound or audio thru speakers. I checked errors under admin. tools/components/events and found this error. (The day before I did have sound and next day nothing...)

The driver detected a controller error on/device/harddisk 1\D disk

The driver has a detected a controller or disk error.

When I connected to MS data base, it gave this info:

A hardware failure that prevents communication with a disk. for example, a loose cable or a loose disk controller failure.

Failure usually caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to computer.

I don't have sound when I put a cd in drive d which is a cd/burner and then I put if Iput it into drive e which is dvd/burner there is no sound. I used the system sound test and no sound.

So.. how do I figure out whether its a controller or a cable? If it is a cable on one of those drives, which one?

I luv luv XP and I don't want to give it up. So I want to fix it! Help!

First thing I checked before I panic majorly is device manager - all working according to puter. I also checked the sound under Admin. tools, and I scanned thru, everything seemed to be okay After I posted here I used Windows troubleshooter and it said to reset but when I tried to open up all the tabs, nothing. My folder was blank. I went to MS and actually just showed "no sound". What I got for an answer was Mr. Fixit (MS automated). It fixed it, was totally cool. Since, I was liking it (Mr. Fixit), I tried to fix a prob with my printer and it referred me back to HP and I had to actually do the hands on. Still the Ms thingy was pretty nice. I keep up all my drives and updates because I like XP the best. Thanks for all your imput.
