No sound, but sound icon has no X

Hi,
This is my first post. I hope I explain this adequately! I am running Vista on a HP dv9000. I disabled the headphones not realizing that I would not be able to find them to enable again. I didn't uninstall or throw anything away. Regular sound was previously very soft except for iTunes. But now there is no sound at all. When I click on the sound icon I see SPDIF interface, I can mute, raise the volume level. It seems to think it is working fine... maybe...no...I know I'm not going deaf because I just heard an airplane over head.
I tried downloading Realtek drivers and Vista drivers and maybe they are not in the right place?

So you disabled headphones ... you use USB headphones then??
