I need help please. I just formatted and clean installed Win98SE. My CDRom drive works and will install programs but when I try to play an audio CD the minutes tick by but no sound. I've checked everything I know to check but no luck. Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated! As info, after the reinstall of Win98, I reinstalled my Creative Soundblaster PCI 128 driver.

I'm assuming everything worked fine prior to the re-install? Did you rearrange any cabling?

:) Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it worked fine before the reinstall, and I haven't touched any of the wires. The speakers work because I can hear the various Windows sounds. I just can't get any sound from an audio CD.

On the old installation did you add the SoundBlaster sound card to the computer after you were running Win98se or was it already there when you upgraded to Win98se?

It was already there. It came on the computer when I bought it in 2000. Its a Gateway btw. I didn't upgrade to Win98SE. I just did a clean install due to problems I was having with it (probably due to spyware, etc.).

I'm thinking it's a driver problem. If you have the SoundBlaster driver installed now you might want to try changing it to the WIN98se one. Other than that if it's a PCI card something might have gotten mixed up with the motherboard drivers. In that case you would have to install them. I'm 99% sure it is driver problem though. Do you know the type of motherboard you have?

The motherboard is a Tabor III. I hope its just a driver problem. That I think I can handle. If I gotta get into the motherboard, I'll have to call 911.

I just dug out an old laptop that I haven't used in over a year to check this out. By your speakers playing the Windows sounds, I agree that everything is working. Try going to Accessories - Entertainment. In this catagory, you should see both Windows Media Player and CD player shown. Please check the settings for each, as I have a feeling that is where your problem is. Keep us posted, as I hate to give up! :)

Thanks for your suggestions GeekaBee and Novice, but no joy. Settings for WMP and CD player were ok, and the Gateway patch was for a different version of SoundBlaster than I'm using. However, I've run across something by accident that I think might be the problem. Could the fact that SoundBlaster and my video device, 3dfx Voodoo3 are sharing the same IRQ number (11) be causing the sound to not work? From what I've read the video card should be on IRQ number 5. If this is true could someone please tell me how I can fix it? Something has to be changed in Bios I think and thats something I've never done before. Thanks!
