    Hi,

    Desperate measures.

I'm trying to fix sound problems on my lame computer.....was wondering if you might know how to help me fix my sound problem?
And yes it is of course that dell dimension 4600i w/ xp- sp3. Yes I know its an old and now lame computer and there are sooo many others out there w/similar sound problems w/Dell computers. But like most people (in the real world), right now I do not have the $$$ to just go out and buy a precious but fragile $$$$ mac and the pricey precious but fragile mac accessories.

    I have this constantly reoccurring problem with my internal mic with "mic signal too weak". So whenever I google how to fix it I end up being told to download/add stuff that always screws up my entire sound leaving me with no sound and many problems;
-my speaker icon then dissapears from task bar
-when I do find and click on speaker icon the volume control is grayed out.
-when i type "SndVol32.exe" into Run it says "There is no active mixer device available. To install......"
-In my device manager there's a yellow question mark next to "Other Devices" as well as yellow question marks next to "Multimedia Audio Controller" and "Video Controller".

I've gone to Dell and to Intel sites for correct drivers and re-downloaded ALL drivers I supposedly need to fix this; Soundmax, that Intel thing, the ADI thing, Nvdia video thing, Soundblaster, that annoying Realtek thing, blah blah, etc, etc.
But whenever I download install and restart computer for each of these is either says "No ADI Codec driver is intalled". Or what will happen is the "Found New Hardware Wizard" will automatically come on and ask to find and install VGA/Video Controller and/or Media Controller except it can never find the files or it rejects the newly downloaded drivers I select to install ("No hardware/files found, cannot finish installation"..etc).
    ?????

I have a lifetime tech help warranty w/Dell so i called them. They certainly tried at length to help me but only to then tell me I'd have to spend over a $100 for some one-time-quick-fix but that is unfortunately not an option for me right now.
I do freelance minor music stuff for extra/needed $$ so I need my internal mic to work -HELP!!!!....if possible.....???

    Thanks/Thanks anyway.

    Sincerely,
    mark

Hi my friend , welcome to MG's :major

    this this your sound driver

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...rFileFormats?DriverId=K4JGP&FileId=2731107785

    and video driver

    http://www.dell.com/support/drivers...FileFormats?DriverId=R66845&FileId=2731129897

follow the installation's instruction to install the drivers correctly !! :wave

    OK. I'll try this -again.
I've downloaded these drivers already and tried loading them -as I said in my original post: I've gone to Dell and to Intel sites for correct drivers and re-downloaded ALL drivers I supposedly need to fix this; Soundmax, that Intel thing, the ADI thing, Nvdia video thing, Soundblaster, that annoying Realtek thing, blah blah, etc, etc.
But whenever I download install and restart computer for each of these is either says "No ADI Codec driver is intalled". ?????
But I will try again and also look for and follow those "installation instructions" you emphasized. The instructions have never shown up before. I usually click on dwnlded driver and it automtclly starts loading on to my computer, finishes, tells me to "restart" and then that whole cycle begins -as explained/reposted above.

    Thx again.

You should update your chipset drivers with this download first. There are two shown. The top is for English only.

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...=IntelĀ®+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

According to pcidatabase, the audio controller is intel 82801 EB/ER

If falconattack's driver does not work, use driversweeper again to clear the audio driver and try installing this one. It may take awhile to connect but you should get the download.

Your video card shows as Chip Number: RV280 Chip Description: Radeon 9200 SE Series - Secondary

Try this driver after removing your video drivers with drivesweeper if falconattack's driver link does not work for you.

Re: No sound Dell 4600 xp 2012 -Fixed -Thx!!!!

Finally got it to work again. Thanks to your clear, simple -and quick(!!) help, falconattack. Really appreciate it.
Had to do a few things before I finally got my Hrdwre Wizard to finally load up the drivers you referred -which I'd already downloaded but couldn't get Wizard to install.
-So I downlded that Driver Sweeper you linked. Deleting a ton of duplicate and unnecessary sound and video drivers.
-Did "Uninstall/Delete" of all YELLOWED devices in Device Mngr.
-Tried to install the drives you recmnded/linked and the Hrdwr Wizrd did FINALLY find and install them but I got a "No INF drivers" waring after trying to install the R66845 /video driver. Googled "INF for XP" and was directed to Intel drivers for the needed INF driver. Installed INF then Hrdwre Wzrd was able to quickly install the R66845 /video driver.

    1) Install first: R94481 ADI Codec-sound driver!
    2) Install second: infinst_auto -The INF driver -install before installing the R66845 video driver!!
    3) Install third: R66845 VIP my video driver-ATI 64MB All-in-Wonder 9000 Driver.

While trying to fix sound I also found this great free mixer/volume/mic booster. A small simple and free file: http://www.angelfire.com/oh4/quickmixer/QMixer.html

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

Re: No sound Dell 4600 xp 2012 -No sound AGAIN!

Dell 4600 No sound, again -due to Realtek AC97 messing it all up.

Dell Dimenson 4600 with XP SP3

    I installed first:
The R94481 ADI Codec sound driver
then the Intel Chipset- infinst_autol The INF driver
    then R66845 VIP my video driver-ATI 64MB All-in-Wonder 9000 Driver.
I had sound and video (still got wavey lines at start up and slow/lagging scrolling on web pages) but sound worked ok.

When I went to tweak my "sound-input" that's when I noticed things weren't right. i opened my Device Manager and saw the "Other Devices" and "Video Controller" still had those yellow ? marks.
I was advised by Dell to download "Realtek AC97". Which ALWAYS screws up my sound when I install it -get that blue screen etc and then sound is now completely gone!!

I also keep getting "NO ATI graphics" on start up.
    "No INF"
"setup was unable to complete the installation try to setup display adapter with standard VGA driver".
Question: Do I need the giant 200 mb ATI Catalyst driver/file set up?
I never had this on my computer before. Why now?

I just did a Drver Sweep.

These are all the drivers I have:

-Intel Chipset- infinst_autol The INF driver.
    -R94481 ADI Codec- sound driver
    -R66845 -video driver ATI 64MB All-in-Wonder 9000
