No sound from audio-in

I want to transfer some audio tapes to my computer. I have Audacity, dl'd the mp3 encoder, have the audio male-male patch cord... I think I'm set up. I know the line-in audio works, because I get sound from my satellite receiver through it. My problem, though, is that when I connect the cassette deck to it, no sound is coming through on my PC.

I have an HP TouchSmart... IQ506, I believe it is, running 64-bit Vista.

    Thanks for any help!

I have done something like that with a device that plugged into a USB
    port from the cassette deck.

Once it's plugged in, I had to go to:
Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio -> Sound Recording

The new device is then listed there and has to be selected.
Also, I think the 'Use only default devices' check box has to be ON.
