No Sound from My Speakers

    Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro x64, SP2. I have all the MS updates. A few days ago, my sound system stopped working.

It's happened a couple of times before. The first time, I unplugged the cable from my computer, rebooted and connected it again and the sound came back.

The second time, I had to do a format, but it was worth it because the sound came back.

This time, those things didn't help.

I went into Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and everything there was set right.

I also went into Device Manger. There aren't any yellow question marks. I checked each item under Audio and they're either enabled or the settings were correct.

I tried all the MS troubleshooting for each item in Audio but none of them helped.

Is there anything that I can try that I haven't already tried?
I WANT MY SOUND BACK! :cry

Are you sure the speakers are working correctly?

Are you sure the sound card is seated correctly (if it is an addon sound card)?

Are you sure that none of the windows sound settings are muted (even in the extended sound control panel)?

    try plugging in some headphones

A few years ago a machine found it's way to me with a no sound problem, the sound card was recognized by windows and as far as windows was concerned the card was working but it turned out to be a bad sound card.

    Hi collinsl and voodoo3rd . . . thanks for replying :)

You brought up good points but I don't have a sound card, it's onboard, and the sound isn't muted. I don't have a set of earphones, oddly enough. I'll see if I can borrow a pair from someone. I hope it's not the sound system. It's only a little over a year old, out of warranty, and it was expensive. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, don't I feel like the biggest dummy in the world!:-o

I have 23 ext hdds and the first thing I checked was to make sure that the power cord was plugged in. I must've followed the wrong cord after a while and found that it was. Today, I moved out my desk, unplugged everything, plugged everything back in and I have audio!

    Ahem . . . no laughing roflmao

Denise, I was going to ask that but I didn't want to seem like a smart a@#. I did that before and someone thought just that and took offense to my question.
But I'm glad you fixed it I was monitoring the thread waiting for the resolution

    Hi buggabear,

After I formatted and the sound system still didn't work, I got a little worried that something was wrong with it, as I mentioned. If you had mentioned the power cord not being plugged in, I wouldn't have gotten insulted, and the other person shouldn't have either. I didn't get insulted when collinsl asked if my settings were muted. These things happen.

I'm building a new pc right now. When it wouldn't post, I unseated everything and reseated them again and it still didn't work. The problem turned out to be the cable that connects the hdd to the mobo. It was brand new and I bought 10 of them and the one I randomly picked was broken. I never would have thought that it was the cable until someone mentioned it. I still didn't think it could've been the cable because it was new but I changed it anyway and the computer posted. So nothing is too little to overlook. :wine
