No sound in Internet Explorer problem

Hi, I have no sound at all in internet explorer on youtube or myspace videos etc and no sound on flash videos that play as ads in yahoo for example. I have tried reinstalling and messing with flash itself but that has not helped at all, I have also checked that i'm enabling sounds in IE which I am so i'm stuck.
Another problem with the audio side that might be related is im trying to cut an mp3 down and the program I use is erroring as well it says "could not open wave/audio device" I can play songs and videos with media player and quicktime but im really stuck! if anyone can help with this i'd really appreciate it.

Only the boring basics, be sure all drivers are up to date. Try a better browser, I have found many problems go away with a simple install of firefox:
