have tried downloading various drivers, un-installing and re-installing so many things i can't even remember what.

one thing i do recall was missing 'sndvol32.exe' but once i got that all i could then do was get the volume control icon onto my task bar. still no sound though.

so happy to start again from scratch with any suggestions. (but plz not another windows install) :-o

Do you have any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Also, open control panel>sounds and audio devices. Click the audio tab and in sound playback, what are the options for default device?

    device manager:

    sound, video and game controllers;

    amd high definition audio device
    audio codecs
    legacy audio codecs
    legacy video capture devices
    media control devices
    video codecs

    ? other devices;

? audio device on high definition audio bus
    ? sm bus controller
    ? unknow device
(have tried updating each of these ... no luck)

in the sound/audio devices in the audio tab under sound playback, no audio devices are listed. everything is grayed out and nothing selectable.

thanks for yr help so far. :)

    Hello,
Can you create an Everest Report and post the log as a txt file? I will be out for most of the day today. If I cannot look at it, I am sure somebody here will help.

I do not see an attached Everest Report. It would also help if you gave the make and model of your computer. You said you wiped the drives. This includes the drive with the OS? I will also be out for most of the day tomorrow and Friday because of some personal issues.

before i reinstalled windows i thought it was 'service pack 3'. after the install i'm pretty sure it was still calling itself 'service pack 3' on my system information and cc cleaner etc but i did notice and think it odd that there were no service pack 3 files in my add/remove program. now i see it's calling itself service pack 2 again - whether that's because i wiped the drives or because i changed something in the registry trying another fix i don't know. i think this is relevant but not sure why. :confused

eta: sorry that was way too long. hope this works instead.

im not sure of the make. it was built by this guy who sells them over the net. the operating system is xp pro, motherboard is only 5 months old, asusa m4a78 em1394. i used a program called drive sweeper to wipe anything that looked audio/video related on the c-drive.

    have a good day.

You need SP3 in order to use High Definition Audio. I would install SP3.

right ... i'll get onto that now. since i wiped those drivers ... are they back or did i need to do something to get them back or will sp3 bring them back?

just looked and see they're back but graphics card has an exclamation mark on it. will sort that after. :)

After you install SP3. Download the drivers from here. The Audio driver is actually separate from the HDMI driver.

I would download the chipset driver first,Video,Lan, and then audio

ok doing that now. for some reason the download is really slow so this could take a while. i see they're zip files and i do have win rar but not so confident in using it. i never really know what i'm doing. i'm assuming i somehow install all these drivers as i download them?

For the chipset driver, you should only download the first.

AMD Chipset Program Driver WHQL V5.10.1000.8 (Package Version 8.561) for Windows 32/64bit XP.(WHQL)

For video, if you use the integrated video on the motherboard.

    AMD VGA Driver V8.61 for Windows XP/XP 64bit/vista/vista 64bit

    For Lan:

    Realtek RTL8112L LAN Driver V5.736.728.2009 for 32/64bit Windows XP.(WHQL)

    For audio:

Realtek HD Audio Driver v5.10.0.5859 for Windows 64bit XP/32bit XP. (WHQL)

    For HDMI:

AMD HDMI Driver V5.10.0.5880 for Windows XP/XP 64bit.

No need to install the utilities yet.

:cry:cry:cry <<< happy tears, my audio is working!

gtell thanks so much for all yr time.

for some reason 3 of the 5 of those installs froze and i had to use task manager to end the programs. does my comp need some kind of clean-up after all that?

also one of the entries under the 'sound, video and game controllers' tab in device manager has an exclamation mark on it. microsoft winmm wdm audio compatibility driver - i tried to update the driver but no joy. does this matter if my sound is working?

ut oh .. not quite there yet.

still have no audio when trying to play you tube videos, when playing a game online, eg, farmtown and there's no sound when windows shuts down or starts up.

in the sounds and audio devices everything in the volume tab is still greyed out and un-clickable. on the audio tab under sound playback the default device is modem #0 line playback. under sound recording it's the same default device and under midi music playback it say no midi playback devices. also all the options on the audio tab are greyed out so no option to select or try to change anything.

good news! after fluffing around for another few hours looking for a fix, the problem was that winmm wdm audio compatibility driver that had the exclamation mark next to it.

while reading various threads helping others and so many suggestions to un-install and re-install their problematic devices, i decided to un-install and re-install that one.

so i un-installed it, re-booted comp and for some reason before trying to find it and re-install it, i instead went into my 'sounds and audio' properties again. there i found that i finally had options under the both the sound and audio tabs and was able to select realtek for my devices. tested my sounds and they were back! :-D

so once again, THANK YOU so much tgell. i'd have been searching for ages without getting pointed to those exact asus drivers. i did read a lot to d/l drivers directly from the motherboard site but to us non-geeks it's just impossible to know exactly which ones or in what order to install. :)

now onto my next problem .... rolleyes
