No sound in XP

I have looked at all of the forums, and for the most part I tried that before I came here. I have reinstalled my drivers, and my speakers are working. I tested them on another computer. I am using realtek AC'97 sound drivers. I just switched computers. My old one was getting a little to old so I bought a little better one. The sound did work at one point I know. I used it before as a computer in my room, and the sound did work. I have tried so many things, and nothing is working. I am using onboard sound. Any help on this matter appreciated.

Couple of quickies: everything look alright in Device Manager (no yellow exclamation marks)? Have you tried any of the headphone jacks on the machine? What are you using as a source for your sound: Windows Sounds, your CD/DVD player, or what? And, of course, the obvious: is your volume control showing up on your taskbar, and, if so, is there anything muted?

 

I have done everything you said. I am going to look inside the machine and see if maybe the cable for onboard is loose.

 

Are you certain you have the correct drivers? Is your PC store bought--if so you may be able to find drivers on the manufacturer's website for your model.

 

That fixed it. The cable for it was loose.
