No Sound no matter what I try!!

I have checked every and any possibility I think could be causing my lack of sound yet no matter what I try I continue having no sound. I've already checked with the folks in the Hardware forum and I thought it wouldn't hurt to try here as maybe I'm still missing something.

My EVEREST report (and I've edited somewhat as the report was a MILE long, and if you see something that needs fixing within the whole report let me know ; - ))

As always, many thanks to those of you who'll reply in this thread.

The only bit of info needed was the motherboard

    The driver is here

I don't know what you've tried already, but you need the correct drivers first

Other things to check - once you've confirmed in Device Manager that you do have the right drivers installed.

    1) Is sound enabled in the BIOS

    2) Are you plugging the speakers in the right hole - should be a green one

    3) Test on another machine that the speakers actually work would be a good idea too

    mikkh,

I have already downloaded that file and have it stored where if I need to get to it again (to re-install if necessary) I can....

I also have made sure that the sound is enabled in the BIOS as well as have the speakers connected to the correct output (green)

I know the speakers are still working as I took them from a known working other machine.

EVERYTHING appears to be set correct as I far as I can tell yet still nada where sound is concerned.

    Any ideas?

Is the Windows Audio service running?

Please place reports in text files and attach them in the future.

So, what happened? Was the sound working, and then suddenly was not working? Or it never worked? How about some history? ;) Thanks

    dlb,

Quick background info on prior use of this PC:
This comp was used in a music recording studio and therefore was using a specific soundcard for just that purpose. When we upgraded to a different machine and removed the soundcard from this PC no sound using the on-board audio can be had. I have checked everything possible and I have failed!

I have uninstalled/reinstalled every driver, as well as made sure all settings were where they would need to be for the on-board audio to work.

First, does your Device Manager show a problem with your audio drivers?

If it does, download and install your motherboard chipset drivers. (They are needed intact and uncorrupted in order for your board's hardware to be identified)
ATI Chipset All in one driver V7.991 for Windows 2K/XP

Then check in Add/Remove Programs, uninstall any SoundMax drivers you find there. If you have tried any others, uninstall them also.
Check in your Program Files for SoundMax (you may want to do a search) Delete any that you find.

Download, install, and run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.

    Install your driver:
SoundMAX Audio Driver version V5.12.3860 for Windows 2K/XP
Then do a complete shut down and re-boot.

Edit: I just realized, we did all this before, in another thread.
Have you run a reg cleaner to remove any lingering effects of the other drivers and sound cards?

Some motherboards have a header that a cable would plug into for the front panel audio. If the front panel audio is not connected to this header, you won't get any audio unless you jumper pins 1 & 2, and pins 5 & 6. You can install drivers, and everything in Windows will say "Yup, the sound is working" but you won't actually hear anything. I first ran into this on a new build about a year and a half ago, and I almost returned the motherboard thinking that the on board sound was dead. After closely scrutinizing the manual, I saw a small "Caution..." section that mentioned the jumpers. As soon as they were installed, everything was fine.

NOTE: this is on SOME (not all) motherboards! It may be possible to damage the board if it doesn't require these jumpers. So check the manual carefully

UPDATE: I just looked at the manual for the motherboard. On page 1-22 it shows that you DO need the jumpers!
    Link to manual http://joule.bu.edu/~hazen/LinuxCluster/e1511_p4r800-vm.pdf
I can't tell because the schematic doesn't have pin numbers, but it's the two blue sets that need to be jumpered (usually pins 1,2 and 5,6)

Soooo..... What happened?!?!?! Is this fixed?!?!?! Why do people continually just leave us hangin' like this and they never come back to say "Hey thanks! I got it fixed! Thanks for the tips and all the help you guys!".... well.... not everyone is like that, but the majority of 'em are.... I just like knowing if the problems are solved, and a little thank you is nice.
    I need closure! :cry
    (j/k ;) )

I'm waiting to see, too. ;) I would like to know why this one refused to put out sound. :tas

Sorry, it's been a few days.......

Anyway....I do not have front panel audio on this machine
It's strictly a "rear entry" setup rolleyes :D

So......to answer your question I STLL am without audio.

    :cry

@ DrumGuy- maybe you didn't read carefully enough.... re-read posts #9 and esp. #10 above. I believe this is where your problem lies.....

    You sir, ROCK!! :dood

I actually came back to this thread as it was only today I finally got fed up with what was going with my lack of sound so I decided to refresh myself as to what I may have or had not already tried.

I realized I was blinded by frustration as I completly missed your post regarding the jumpers and sure enough..............SUCCESS!!

I have you to thank for recommending me towards something I was sure was not the problem. BRAVO!!

So there you have it. This case, solved!

Thanks to all who joined in the attempt of a solution.
