    After having some sound problems possibly caused by bad headset,
    I have reinstalled the UAA (KB888111XPSP2) and SoundMAX driver packages, and have no apparent device problems, but have no sound except for system beeps. Every device in the control panel audio pane is grayed-out and a message says that there is no playback, recording, or midi devices. In the Device Manager the mixer ADI UAA function driver for Hi Def Audio status is that it is enabled but not started. What is to be done to correct this? (windowsXP pro, sp2)

    Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
    Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
    Right click on it and choose Properties.
    Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

    Yes, I had already checked this and it is still started and set to automatic.
    Thanks, any other ideas? Is there anyway to uninstall UAA for HD audio. Could this be causing the pb?

    If you have HD audio, you need the UAA.
    Is your Soundmax on board, not an add-on card?

    Check: BIOS to insure on-board sound is enabled.
    As the PC starts, press one of these keys,
    (here is a list by manufacturer)http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
    Or the right key will be posted on the very first screen.
    Tap it until you enter set-up, then look for your audio (it should be in Advanced or in Integrated Peripherals)
    Make sure sound is set correctly, when finished. For Onboard Sound (Enabled) For an add-on Sound Card (Disabled)

    Yes, the chip is onboard but there is nothing in the bios to control it. I tried to uninstall UAA, but on rebooting the system reinstalled the SW. From Device Mgrl I disabled the ADA UAA functions for the SoundMAX integrated digital HD audio to no avail.

    Try disabling it, rebooting, then uninstalling.
    If that doesn't work:
    Try both these fixes. (They are for Realtek but may work with SoundMax, also)
    First Fix:
    KB835221 Hotfix
    1. Remove "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus"
    2. Download from Microsoft the KB835221 hotfix and install it: KB835221 Hotfix http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...tem=pv-22533-1
    3. Restart the system, and XP will automatically detect the devices
    4. After this you should be able to install Realtek drivers.
    Second Fix:
    1) In Device Manager, remove the High Definition audio device (or the unknown device, if there is one) under Sound, Video & Game controllers.
    2) Go into Device Manager>System, right click the UAA Hi-Def Bus driver.
    Disable the device and then uninstall it. (Do not re-boot yet)
    3) Uninstall Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (you may just have a folder that says Realtek) through Add/Remove Programs (if it's installed but not working)
    KB888111
    In Add/Remove Programs, look for the KB888111 update and uninstall it. (It may have uninstalled in last step)
    If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
    Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer.
    To work around this problem, follow these steps.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB888111 (may be in SP3)
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.
    Run CCleaner, both the Cleaner and Registry.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_S...ish_d4191.html
    Reboot, but don't let Windows install the driver.
    Install your driver, then reboot, again.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Realtek_Hi...P03_d4902.html
    The UAA should be contained in this download.

    Thanks again, but none of these were successful. I downloaded KB835221 and followed the instructions, removed the KB888111 from the SP3 registry entry,ran CC cleaner, but after rebooting windows installed the Soundmax drivers which I uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing was changed except the driver for the modem was not installed. All the other drivers were installed properly it appears. Any other ideas?

    It's possible it may be the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator.
    Scenario One
    You DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
    You DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Now see if you can install your driver.

    I followed the instructions, but no success here either. I reinstalled windows thinking some hooks were not connecting with no help there either.
    Further to check the machine's condition, I installed a new disk and installed a clean XP sp2 and all drivers supplied on original cd from Asus. Eureka! Everything works. I then reinstalled the original disk and removed all sound drivers and incidences in registry, reinstalled all the same original drivers from cd, but again no cigar. I can see that there is something hung up in windows that does not allow these drivers to function, but I have no idea how to rectify this. Have you any other method of solving this problem?

    After days of searching!!! This finally Worked!! Spending 5 minutes to share the solution I found on techspot.

    I've looked elsewhere, read some more things and solved it! It was the "Enumerator" issue. To make sure you've been following the right procedure checkthis:
    1. Chek if PnP SW Enumerator is installed on your machine (Device Manager / System devices) - should be listed there!
    2. If it is not there then we will probably solve it!
    3. Locate "machine.inf" on your OS, copy it somewhere and modify it (find "ExcludeFromSelect=*" and remove the line or simply exclude it from processing by adding a ";" at the beginning)
    4. Check the "machine.inf" file for location where SWENUM should be located (mine was reading: SWENUM.CoInstallers.CopyFiles = 11 ; %windir%\System32)
    5. Find "swenum.sys" file on your XP installation CD (mine was in DRIVER.CAB) and copy it to the proper location (I am not sure if it is necessary but worked for me)
    6. Go to Control Panel /Ad HW and follow the wizard towards manual selection of device to be added
    7. Select Add System device
    8. Select Have disk
    9. Navigate to changed machine.inf
    10. from the list select standard deviecs (in the left list) and "Plug and Play Software Enumerator" in the right list
    11. Finish the installation
    If it stil does not work reinstall the audio adapters' drivers. It should work now. If it does not, I can't help.
    I am writing these instruction so much in details as I only found very basic instruction on the web and only after trying around different ways got the result! Hope it works for you to!
