    Hi

Are the speakers you are using working fine, plugged in firmly?

Have you checked the sound is not muted or low level ( either click the speaker icon in the system tray or goto Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > and check volume levels )

When did all of this happen, had you been installing any new hardware or software, if so what?

    Had you just re-installed Windows?

In Device Manager are their any yellow ! marks, if so what by? ( to get tho this click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System icon and click the Device Manager tab )

Is the card installed an original one supplied with the PC or added on later as DELL do not list the Creative 128 PCI card in their drivers section, only the Creative 64 PCI cards?

But these are the drivers for the card that your Everest log detects,

Top set of drivers listed are the last known.....

I guess so not sure since can't listen to any media sound.

    Didn't see a volume level.
Noted that all the sounds was .wav.

    After a malware infection.

No, after the malware infection had to reinstall all Windows updates. For some reason they disappeared after got attacked.

Not sure.I purchased computer used from Rent A Center.

I get this error everytime I try to play any music.

Windows Media Player cannot play this file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device on your computer, It might be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

My computer is clean this is the only lingering problem after the attack.

Believe it or not I had a similar problem on a Pentium II laptop years ago running Windows 98. The sound icon itself mysteriously disappeared and no sounds would play (although multimedia would work, there was just no sound). One day I downloaded the newest version of DirectX from Microsoft and it solved the issue entirely. I would say that it couldn't hurt to try to download the newest version of DirectX (9.0 c I believe) from the website. This is, of course, after you went down the line of other troubleshooting measures, some listed above. I have a feeling this will solve the issue, but there is no harm at all in trying it.

    Hi

I would be downloading the Intel Chipset drivers from dell for that motherboard http://support.dell.com/support/dow...3&typecnt=1&libid=27&releaseid=R8259&vercnt=2 ( get the Hard Drive installable ones )

Then install the sound card driver I linked you too earlier.

I notice from your Everest log you already have DirectX9.0c, but it couldnt hurt to re-install it once the Chipset and sound drivers are installed.

Oh, good eye, Halo. I didn't see that. I don't remember when I had a similar problem if I still had DirectX still on my computer or not or if it was present and missing files/damaged or non-existant. I would listen to Halo, but like he says, in a worst case scenario, it would not hurt and would take little effort to redownload it and reinstall. Good luck.

Thanks again for all your help.

I've did everything suggested but still getting the same error when trying to open up a music file.

    I downloaded the PCI drivers.

    I downloaded the motherboard drivers.

    I downloaded Direct X.

Could it be that maybe the sound card doesn't work anymore?

Also since my 15 year old listens to music more than I do she said the first error that come up was wave sound not supported.

She said this is happend when she dragged some music in MMJB.

And when she tried to play the music she put there that's when the error wave sound not supported come up and hasn't worked since.

Could that be where the problem come from?

If not I would still like to say thanks for all your time and help.

There's not much I can do if it needs a sound card because I can't afford one or put one in.

But I really appreciate all your help.

You could try to download a codec pack here on this website. That helped me solve a somewhat similar issue with DVD sound I had earlier. I downloaded K-Lite Codec pack from the downloads area. Could be worth a try. Let me ask.....Do you get sound from DVD's or CD's?

    No sound from Cd.
When I insert a CD it says I need to insert a CD.

So it's not identifying theres a cd in the drive.
