no sound on fresh WinXP install, please help

I can't seem to figure out why the sound won't work on this computer I tried helping a friend with. I reinstalled WinXP and then no sound. When I try to play something through Windows Media Player, it says it can't detect a sound device. When I go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, it doesn't list the sound card as an option to choose from for it to use with sound. Hardware shows Creative SB Live! Gameport, but volume says no audio device, and audio and voice all say "Modem #0 Line Playback" as the only option for default device. I've run the Everest report, I think, and I've attached it here. Please let me know if you need any other info to help me solve this problem. Thank you for your time,

Looks like you need to load your audio drivers:

1. Because you're running XP SP2, first you'll need to install the MS UAA patch located here or here.

2. Reboot.

3. Download and install the Creative drivers.

4. Reboot and see if your symptoms have changed. If not, let us know - there are other steps we can take.

Be advised: once your issues are cleared, I strongly suggest you upgrade to XP Service Pack #3 - the SP includes various security enhancements, and Microsoft/3rd-party support is more readily available for SP3.

 

Thank you Caliban! You are brilliant wonderful and amazing! The problem is solved now, thank you! I had to go in and tell the sound and audio thing to select the creative sound card once it could recognize it thanks to you, but then ... amazing sound! From a really old machine that now acts like new! Thanks!
