I dont have sound on my computer, bummer! I was told that my computer was originally installed with windows 98, but I have since upgraded to windows xp. when I go into volume control it tell me there are no active mixer devices available. I don't know where to start, thought that I was missing drivers, but can't determine which one to download, my audio codec and legacy drivers are all working properly. Can anyone help me?

ok, so I downloaded the link to Realtek, nothing happening unless I'm doing something wrong. I went in to try and adjust my volume control and I get the error message "There are no mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to Control Panel, click printers and other hardware and then click Add Hardware" I did just that and it tells me it can't locate the file. Can someone please help me!!!

You'll need to know the make of your sound card, or if you have integrated audio, you'll need the motherboard make and model. Go their web site and download and install the appropriate drivers. Installing a driver that you are unsure of is usually not a good idea. For example, if you have a Creative SoundBlaster card and try to install RealTek drivers, you'll have problems. At the very least, the drivers will error out berfore installing. Locate and download Everest (available free, right here from 'The Geeks'), install it. Look under the devices section and you should see the sound card maker/sound chip model. Go into your device manager (right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Hardware tab, click Device Manager button) and see what's listed under 'Sound, video, and game controllers'. If you have nothing there other than 'Legacy' or generic items (ie: no "brand names") or if you see any red "X's" or any yellow question marks, the drivers are not installed correctly, not installed at all, or the sound card has been turned off. If you see a red X, right click the item and click on 'Enable'. Otherwise, with yellow question marks, you'll need to load/reload the driver. If you do have yellow ?, right click and choose uninstall and restart the PC. Win Xp should at least detect the sound card and prompt for drivers, and hopefully reinstall them for you.
Even if you don't have any marks in the device manager, it may not be a bad idea to uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers anyway..... I know, it all sounds real confusing... check the device manager first and run Everest and let us know what you find... we're more than happy to help!!! :D

Oh yeah... when you post again, add the make/model of the PC and any other 'specs' that may be needed... THX!
