    Hi Everyone

Suddenly about 6 weeks ago the sound stopped working. It seemed to coincide vaguely with a download of pdf reader which I then uninstalled. I have done a full Malware Removal and eventually found a Trojan but has not made any difference to the sound problem. Nothing is showing in device manager and I have reinstalled the Soundmax integrated digital audio with the latest download from IBM. I have also gone into the BIOS to see if there is a way I can test for sound but couldn't find anything.
    Can anyone help :)

    Thanks

    Greetings, mastermiaow...

What's your operating system version, Service Pack # and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit)?

Couple of things you might try:

    1. Grab the chipset driver for your operating system (I'm assuming you're downloading from this page) - install it, reboot, then install the Soundmax driver again.

    2. Check your services, see if the Windows Audio service is up and running.

    3. If this is an XP system try applying the UAA audio patch and the Audio Fix-it.

Thanks for getting back so quickly Caliban. Trying to sort things before Skype conversation tomorrow with academic supervisor..

So I have Windows XP Service Pack 3 32 bit.
I had already downloaded the chipset and installed but did it again, rebooted and uninstalled and reinstalled the Soundmax driver but no change.
I applied the audio patch and audio fix but nothing.
How do I check if Windows audio service is working? If you mean control panel/sound and audio devices, I have done that and played around and nothing :(

    Thanks again buddy!

    Good morning...

To check your services click Start > Run, type services.msc, click Ok. The Windows Audio service should be 'Started' and set for 'Automatic'.

    Hi Caliban
I did this and it is on 'started' and 'automatic'.

    Hi Falconattack

I downloaded and installed Driver Fusion but I get this message which stops me running it. It says:"To run this application you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET framework:v4.0.30319
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .NET framework" :confused

I tried this. The netFramwork setup verification utility successfully verified .NET Framework 2.0 SP2. But...the error message is saying I need to install .NET Framework v4.0....:(

OK so I installed Driver Fusion. Initially it took up a lot of CPU power and froze the computer the first time I tried to reboot in normal after running it in Safe Mode. It found three sets of sound drivers:
    ASUS
    Creative
    Realtek
I analysed in safe mode and then in normal but it didn't find any drivers to delete. I ran it for about 15 minutes both times and nothing came up on the screen...

    And still no working sound...:cry

    Yassou Falconattack :)

    The laptop is Type R50e 1834-BYG S/N L3-WYBC3 05/05.
There is nothing showing in device manager. I thought last night that maybe I had accidentally turned the sound off through keys Fn and F5 but nothing changes. Is there any way to check hardware settings to see if sound card is working?

    Hello everybody :)

Falconattack I downloaded the document. Obviously it is for an HP not a Thinkpad so I couldn't do everything. I have already tried steps 1-3, the audio device is showing as enabled and I have downloaded drivers etc.
I tried to go into the Thinkpad BIOS (step 4), there is a list of options for configuration:
    Networks
    Debug Port
    Parallel Port
    PCI
    USB
    Keyboard
    Display
    Power
    Alarm
    Memory

I am not sure which one (if any) of these allows me to test for the sound?
Step 5 is reseating the sound card. As I have a laptop and in the instructions are a for a desktop, I assume this not relevant.
Step 6 is for system recovery. I haven't tried this. I don't have a recovery CD although Windows came installed on the new machine. IBM have this button called Access IBM which I think was instead of the recovery CD. But a few years ago my hard drive packed up and I replaced it with a generic harddrive and since then the Access has not worked.
Also I cannot do system restore because I toggled it when trying to remove Malware :(

    Good morning...

Since you stated that you're in need of audio immediately for school purposes, you might consider picking up an external USB sound card until you can get your computer's audio issues resolved. Best Buy carries several - for example this Creative model or this el-cheapo. Don't know if you've got a Best Buy handy but any reputable computer chain should carry them (even Walmart). Something to think about.

    Hi Caliban and Falconattack

    Thanks for your input.
Firstly Caliban, I have purchased a new laptop (lenovo T410) so am now trying to fix it to sell on.
Falconattack thanks for the instructions regarding cleaning up drivers but I don't understand why that should make any difference - I tried it once and didn't work, nor did installing new drivers...
I have looked into booting from an external Xubuntu OS CD and Windows 7 CD to see if the problem is the OS on my laptop. The Xubuntu didn't boot at all (blank screen with flashing cursor), the Windows 7 CD did boot but there was no Windows 'sound'. I am leaning to the problem being with the hardware :confused.....

    OK have tried this.

    I get to number 9:
In the window for search and installation options, select Search for the best driver in these locations, and select the Include this location in the search check box.

The driver I downloaded from Lenovo is an application file. However when I browse for this in the downloads folder the OK button is greyed out. Instead I opened the application file and it automatically downloaded to C/Win/Drivers/Audio. I then was able to install the driver from that address using 'Search for the best driver'. The address was C/drivers/audio/smaxwdm/w2k_xp. I restarted the computer and nothing has changed. So now I have resinstalled the latest driver both manually and automatically - I don't think the problem is the driver! :confused

    Thank you

OK well this is embarrassing :-o The problem was that I had accidentally pressed the mute button on the Thinkpad. This is a seperate button on the keyboard and has no connection with Windows sound so that's why it didn't show up.
I wanted to thank you guys especially Falconattack and Caliban - you were really helpful and I learned a lot. So wanted to say 'thankyou' cos it is guys like you that help all of us learn :)
