Hi, I am trying to install a sound driver for a PC-104 stack running Windows XP SP2 Embedded. I have tried a few different drivers, each with the same message: "Cannot load the SoundMax Integrated Audio driver. The driver file may be missing. Try installing the driver again, or contact you system administrator." I have run the drivers in depends, which tells me what files a program needs to run, and all the .dll and .sys etc. are there. I don't understand why it is telling me the driver cannot be found when I installing that driver. I have my system specs in the report.txt, any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Two things you can try;
Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked

    Updating through Hardware Wizard
Right click either multimedia device in Device Manager. Choose Update driver,
Choose "No, not this time" on the first window of the Hardware Wizard, click Next.
Choose "Install from a list or specific location", click Next.
Choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install", click Next.
    Click "Have disc".
Then browse to the proper driver. Select the .inf file.

Those shortcuts aren't included in this image, any other way to get there?

I have tried a few different .inf files for installation, and just before it should be done it gives me that message that I quoted in my first post.

    Not sure I understand.
If you right click SoundMax in Device Manager>Sounds, Audio, game Controllers, you don't get the Update drivers?
I have XP Pro (not embedded) on my other machine and just followed through the steps and all were there.

Or you can't get to the Services?
    Try this:
Start>Run, type msconfig, go to the services tab, and make sure Windows Audio is enabled there.
Make sure to apply, if you enable it.

Yeah i meant i couldn't get to the audio service. Windows embedded has many things stripped off it. The msconfig command also isn't on this image. Would it still be running even though i can't look at it? Or is there another way to see it?

Do you have Administrative Tools listed in the Start Menu or in All Programs?
You can get to Services from there.

You may need to right click Start, choose Properties.
On the Start Menu tab, choose Customize, and click the Advanced tab.
Scrool down until you see System Administrative Tools. Choose Display on All Programs Menu/Sart Menu.
Click Ok, then Apply, then OK.
It should show on the the Start and/or All Programs Menus now, depending on which display item you choose.

MS has an issue with sending parts of their copyrighted stuff around the 'net. Sorry.

Sorry, I am not really all that familiar with what files would be needed to make that service run properly.

Looking back I see you said you installed several drivers.
    Did you uninstall the extras?

Are you certain SoundMax is the driver you need?
Sorry, but I am not familiar with embedded OS's and am not seeing the info I really need in your Everest report.
SoundMax is showing there but that could be from the driver install and failure.

I looked at the PC-104 specs and don't see much about audio. What I did find, mentions SOUNDBLASTER, not SoundMAx.

yeah. on previous images i have uninstalled the drivers and then the system cannot find the audio hardware at all. and trying to install the new drivers doesnt work. i've been at this for a week or so now, really frustrating. I have tried realtek drivers as well, when i used those i identified it as realtek instead of SoundMax, so i am really at a loss as to which drivers i need.

to everyone with sound problems for xpsp2,i have had the same problems took the comp back as it was 2weeks old to be fixed, they resolved the problem by installing a soundblaster audio card and told me not to use the onboard sound,i think compaq have problems with this,i have had problems with it from day one.
