Hello, I have a similar issue as this thread:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=239719

And to sum that one up, the user had to get an external usb sound card.

I have the same "x" in the volume mixer, and no proper driver seems to be installed and I can't get any to work.

The difference is I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and my sound worked. But I decided to have a clean install of W8 instead and this fails for my sound.

In device manager I can find a "High definition audio controller", and in the properties it states that the device couldn't start (Code 10).

I've spoken to Microsoft and they've agreed to expand my 14 days right to get my money back in case I won't get this to work. Asus told me my computer didn't support windows 8 and didn't want to help me, even though the page says that they recommend windows 8 :confused http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K73SV/
(I'm still trying since the upgrade worked).

I couldn't find anything about audio/sound in my Bios. I've tried to mess around a little with the drivers, changing ownerships and permitions and so on without any luck. Now I've re-installed W8 again so that shouldn't be a problem.

Adding a dxdiag for more info about my computer.

    Hi

At times an upgrade will work as some older drivers from previous OS are still utilised, but when you clean install they are not used but as in this case Win8 will have searched its database of drivers and installed what it thought should work.

What you could try and first off are there any yellow ! marks next to devices in Device Manager and if so what?

But my suggestion and this is born out of getting an old Samsung N110 working with Windows 8 perfectly, but had to workaround a few driver installs.

First off download and install the latest Intel Chipset driver for your model and Windows 8 (this driver update also covers Windows 8.1 when its released) from HERE and once installed reboot, crucial to reboot to fully install the drivers.

Then download the Audio driver from HERE at ASUS a large download btw at 100mb and once downloaded, unzip the files.

Now to install right click the Setup.exe file and choose properties then Compatibility tab and tick the box for Run this Program in Compatibility for: and from the dropdown choose *Windows 7* then tick the Run this program as an Administrator and click Apply

Then run the setup file and click OK at any messages until the driver loads and reboot and test sound. Let us know how you get on.

I would also after the install above run the Audio trouble-shooter from Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Hardware and Sound

Hi again and thank you for quick reply.

I installed the Intel Chipset, rebooted, ran the update from asus in compability mode for w7 as admin. During the install of the audio driver i got "Run C:\program files(x86)\Realtek\Audio\ASF3GUI\ (ASUS SonicFocus 3.0 GUI) failed. I don't think that has anything to do with it. Anyways, setup completes, and prompts me to reboot, and so I do.

I ran the Audio trouble-shooter, but it displays the same as always: Hadware configurations might not be changed (or something like that, got Norwegian language).

Anyways: In the device managment i find 2 yellow triangles:

    - High Definition Audio Controller
    (In properties-driver-driver details there's one file: hdaudbus.sys)

    - Unknown device
"No driver found or necessary for this device", but in details I can find a file C:\windows\inf\oem4.inf which has the capture in it: "INF file for installing Realtek High Definition Audio Driver", so I guess i need to get this unknown device working?

    Hi

Ok lets try something a little different and don't uninstall the audio driver just yet, go into Device Manager and then find the yellow ! marked items and double click one of them to open up properties (Now I hope you have not deleted the downloaded Audio folder form ASUS used earlier)

Now click the Driver tab and then Update Driver and choose Browse my Computer for the Driver Software and navigate to the folder you downloaded and click Next and Windows will scan that folder for any compatible drivers for those devices.

Do this for both of the yellow ! marked items and if one doesn't find anything don't give up on the other as one may need to be installed before the other or vice versa.

If that doesn't work, then uninstall any Realtek Audio driver listed in Add/Remove or Device Manager and then try this, I don't normally cross drivers from makers but this one from Lenovo looks the same model Audio chip, so worth a go as its listed as Windows 8 compatible HERE

Okay I did as you said. Note: It seems like the unknown device doesn't even look for drivers, since it pop up instantly that it "can't find any driver software for the device".

As for the HD audio controller it says that it's already up date.

Then I tried the lenovo setup.exe, didn't resolve it, then I tried to add it to the 2 devices, but no success there either (I've tried every possible option when it comes to installing and uninstalling).

    Appreciate the help.
