My Dell Studio Laptop recently stopped playing audio while I was recording some stuff with my guitar. I was playing the guitar into an amp and from the amp to the computer. The sound started checking in and out for a few minutes, so I unplugged all my recording stuff and tried playing a simple YouTube video.

I realized I have no sound. When I click the 'Speaker' icon in the bottom right where you adjust the volume, it says there is sound coming out (the green bars are moving up and down). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers, going into Safe Mode to see if it would work, I tried looking it up on Google and testing all the other people's suggestions and came out with a silent laptop.

    Anyone have any ideas!?

    Thanks
    Nikkos

    Hi

What model Dell Studio do you have and what version and service pack of Windows do you have?

I would first off tell us if any devices in Device Manager have yellow ! marks or red X's and if so what device are they next too.

I would also try the Fixit HERE and see if that helps this issue at all, do tell us if any errors are listed and what they are as this will help.

One thing I would try is if the above options do not work is to re-install from the DELL support site for your model Dell is to install the chipset driver again and re-boot then install the Audio driver again and see if that helps. Do also double check in Control Panel > Audio that the audio device is not muted or set to headphones, so check the settings carefully.

I have a Dell Studio 1558, and it uses Windows 7. Regarding the Devices, the devices with anything next to them (all of them in this case have a yellow triangle with an ! inside) are two Bluetooth Peripheral Devices, hp LaserJet 2430, and Photosmart D110 Series.
I just tried the FIXit, and it said "We did not detect any problems and therefore no fixes were applied."

I tried reinstalling all the chipsets and audio drivers, still no sound. Could I have possibly blew my sound card out?

I do not know if you have the Diagnostics for this laptop but if you do, try the procedure listed here.

The Diagnostics didn't help either, thanks though.

Did it throw any errors? You might want to run dxdiag.exe and see if that shows anything? Is there any manual switch or key on the computer that adjusts the volume? Right click the speaker and select playback devices. Is there a green check mark next to speakers?

Edit: Do you hear sounds when using earphones?

No sound with headphones, and yes there is a green check next to speakers. I'm beginning to think I blew out the sound card, all the tests say my computer audio has no problems, the drivers are fine, so it must be that, right?

Yeah, no problems found again. So should I just get a new sound card?

There is one thing you can do to determine if it is indeed hardware. Download Puppy linux. Burn the iso file with Imgburn. Boot the CD and connect a usb flash drive with some MP3 music on it when you see the desktop. A USB icon will appear in the lower part of the desktop next to the hard drive. Open the USB drive with one click. Open the music player on the desktop and browse to a file on your USB drive or hard drive. I believe it is the play icon. When Puppy first loads, you should hear a ruf-ruf sound also.

Burning an image file with Imgburn

Here is a guides showing Puppy Linux and how to open it's file manager.

If you do get a sound card, you will have to get a USB device like this and quality can vary. They can only be used with powered speakers.
