No sound, video game controller in device manager. No audio full stop.

I hope nobody minds I do this but I'm not getting much joy resolving an issue on another forum so I'm just going to copy and paste the content of my thread over here (where problems appear get solved by the looks of things). 4 out of 5 of the posts are from me... bit of a one way conversation. Good thing I enjoy my own company.

Any help, insight or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Problem has been resolved.

Problem is back live. After installing the above driver the audio worked fine but there was an obvious lagging when moving the volume fader icon up or down, there was a delay of about fifteen seconds before it took effect. then the fader/mixer/vol box went blank for a while. Glitchy.

I was advised to do a clean install of the driver. Uninstalled the device, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted, then back to the original issue: no sound, red 'x' over the vol icon, no audio output device is installed, and no sound/video/game line in device manager.

Would really use some insight into how this can be resolved or what might be causing it...
