NO Sound Windows Media Player Vista

My wife has GateWay M6750 laptop with the following:
Intel Core2 Dou
3 GB Ram
32 bit Vista Home Premium SP1

We are getting NO sound from it what-so-ever....nothing through Windows Media Player 11 and no sound from any events (default beeps, alarms, etc.) or through the internet, nothing.

I looked at the Sound properties (via the control panel) and there are no speakers listed in the Playback tab...only a "Digital Output Device (S/PDIF)".

I attempted to find information on re-installing Windows Media Player to see if it would correct the issue but can not due to the fact that WMP is part of the Vista OS....I tried to apply the most resent update but can not because the version we have is the most recent....can't uninstall and re-install because it is not listed to be able to uninstall nor can I install a 'lower' version because Windows says I have a newer/newest version.

I really DO NOT want to re-install Vista from scratch because this is the laptop my wife uses for work and losing everything is not an option.

Dose anyone have any ideas? I can provide more information if needed....

Try System Restore to a point prior to the issue. If that does not work try the gateway check list. http://support.gateway.com/s/Checklists/BPC/ck2007030742.shtml

It's not WMP if you have no sound at all, so that will not help.

 

Ended up DLing and installing the Sound Driver from Gateway and seems to have fixed the issue.
