Is it an onboard soundcard or an actual card plugged into a PCI slot? ( you mention RealtekAC97 which is normally onboard sound )

What motherboard do you have ( name and model number ) ?

If you go into Device Manager are their any yellow ! marks?

Did you install the drivers from your motherboard CD or download and install updated ones from your Motheboard manufacturer?

sorry for all the questions as its not a simple thing to diagnose driver issues when we are not sitting next to you adn seeing what you see, so as much info and actual locations of where your looking for enabled/started programs will help... their is nothing wrong with too much info, too little just makes the time to fix your problem longer.
