No Sound....

I am not a computer geek, AT ALL!!! But my computer has no sound. I don't know what the make of the computer is because an IT built it about three years ago and now just recently I had a terrible virus on it so I had a friend completely clear out the entire computer and take out the hard drive and start fresh! So I have no clue what to do! Am I going to have to buy a new sound card? If so how much is that and can I download it for free from somewhere, that is SAFE to download from!!!? Well any help woul dbe greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

Several possibilities here. Sound drivers installed properly, Volume muted, Speakers plugged in properly, chipset drivers installed. First right click on my computer and go to properties and be sure there are no exclamation points next to anything especially sound card. Then check the speaker plugs, should be plugged into green plug on sound card or motherboard and be sure you have a power light on speaker itself if not be sure to plug into wall outlet or power strip. Then check the little speaker in your taskbar, if it's there double click and uncheck any thing that may be muted, there is a little box in each item that should be unchecked. Will need to know if you have a sound card or are using sound on the motherboard. If you have a sound card you need to go into the bios and disable the onboard sound. As you are as you put it not a geek you may want to contact your friend and have them look at it and see if they installed the chipset drivers while your at it.

 

My computer has a yellow question mark and a yellow exclamation point by Multimedia Audio Controller....so obviously this is not good. Am I correct on my assumption?! (I hope I can fix it easily and cheaply)

 

Has it got any other details next to it. Mine says, "SiS 7018 Audio Driver".

I just did a google search using the above search words, and it seems like you could download the driver, if you know what it is.
If you need to identify it, I think there's still a free version of Everest, which scans and identifies your computer's hardware.

 

I think this is definitely a problem. Please if possible download and install Everest and post system specs. I take it there is no possibility of getting your friend to help out.

Ok I downloaded Everest, and thank you guys very much for all your help I really do appreciate it. But I bought my husband a computer game and it wont work because one of the requirements is a sound card.....so he is a little dissappointed! So I hope someone can diagnose this report and help me out. I am very appreciative!!! Thank you!!!
