    Have you recently updated anything?
Also post a little more info such as type of sound card.
Is it a sound card or onboard sound.
Try going to programs> accessories> entertainment and open volume control. Be sure speakers are not muted

It's Realtec AC'97 Audio. There are many things that may cause the problem, eg as mentoned before faulty audio driver, Motherboard malfunction and many more...
I suggest that you try reinstalling the drivers in safe mode (enter with F8 usually).

Also look at sounds and multimedia in the control panel.
    Look at the audio Tab
Make sure that the AC97 is selected for playback.

Nikkilj: You need you Identify your Sound Card and the Type of Sound card you have. Is it an intergrated card? Your paper work that came w/ your comp will tell you the type card you have. Someone here might have the same type card and will be able to help. I have an intergrated sound card that has limmited ablities such as no recording properties so I cant use Internet Phone w/ My comp. If I want to change that I'll have to Install another type of sound card. So you see it helps to Id your card and its type. It could save you a lot of grief. Good luck with your problem. ODIE

nikkilj: The best way to find out about your comp system is to download Major Geeks's freeware "EVEREST Free Edition". http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 Everest will give you your system info. Look at the very bottom of this page for SYSTEM INFO. Then look for Everest Free Edition and download it. If you had a tech guy set up your comp can you get help from him?? Also if you have any kind of headset or earphones you can plug them into the GREEN jack on the front or back of your computer. If it is working then you might have a speaker problem. Check all your conections too. Keep posting here and dont give up. ODIE

OK Nikki we are getting somewhere, honest.

You don't need everest to get the info.

go back to DXdiag and copy the following information please.
If you can, also click on the save all information and post the resulting text file.

    On the SYSTEM TAB
    Bios manufacturer
    Processor
    Direct X version

    On the SOUND TAB
    Name
    Is default device yes/no
    Position of acceleration slider

    MUSIC TAB
    music ports list

    MORE HELP TAB

    Choose msinfo

    expand hardware branch
choose forced hardware note any listed

    expand components branch
    choose sound note everything listed
choose problem devices note anyhting listed

Finally you have recently had a long session with the malware folks. Was the sound working properly after you finished that?
Have you installed any software or hardware since?

eveything has been fine even after i finished all that malware stuff.
the only thing i can think of that i have done was the other day i was trying to sort out this apple mac pc i have got and i plugged the internet cables from this computer into the mac to try n get a connection on that but it dint work (i not right clever wiv comps lol) and since then my sound hasnt worked but i dont realy think that effected it.

OK useful info; I'm sure that the excursion into macland didn't affect your sound, unless you moved anothe cable as well. But you've checked all that twice over hey?

How about the other info? If you are copy and pasting, collect it all together in notepad first, than copy and paste the whole lot into the writing box on MG. Alternatively you can upload (atttach) text files as you did in the malware forum.

Yes you have posted the info I asked for . Thank you.

The standard for the audio output is a light green 1/8th inch or 3.5 mm stereo jack socket.
Some pcs have one on the front and one on the back of the box. Some have a second one on the back of the box. Is the headphone sound the same in all of them ? some outputs can only just drive some headphone. This is why amplified speakers are used. Can you test your speakers from some other source to make sure they are working, before doing anything more to the pc? Make sure the power is on and the vol control knob turned up.

The realtek driver you have is a pretty recent one, did you install it recently?
If you are sure that you speakers are working Ok, you are plugged into the correct socket on the computer and the pc vol is turned up. the next thing to try is to
    'Roll back the driver'

    Goto device manager
hold windows key down and presss pause/break>hardware tab>devie manager
expand the sound video and game controlers entry
double click on realtec ac97 audio
    choose drivers tab
    click rollback driver
you may get more than one choice so you will have to experiment do the most recent first working your way back in time.
