Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

Check in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, click the Volume tab. Make sure the box for placing the volume icon in the task bar is checked.
Also check the Audio tab. See if your sound device is listed in the Sound Playback Default Device list.
Also check the Hardware tab. See if sound device is listed in the list. If it is make sure it is enabled.
And last, right click the Volume icon in the Task bar and choose open Volume Control, choose Advanced, and make sure Digital Output is NOT checked.

It looks like your driver is ok, try these things and post if that helped or not.
If it didn't, post a make and model # if your PC is manufactured (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) or your motherboard ID, if it is a build.
    Or even better:
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

    1. Is the sound cable attached between the drive and the analog audio connector on the sound card?

    2. Are the speakers turned on?

    3. Is the speaker volume turned down?

    4. Are the speakers plugged into the line out or speaker port of the sound card?

    5. Is the transformer for the speakers plugged into plugged into an electrical outlet on one end and the speakers on the other?

    6. Is the volume control for your OS turned down?

Does the sound card have a diagnose file on the install disk?

    7. Does Device Manager report a problem with the card? Is another device using the same I/O address or IRQ number?

    8. Using Device Manager, uninstall the sound card and then reinstall it using Add New Hardware in the Control Panel.

    9. To check for bad connections, turn off the computer and then remove and reinstall the sound card.

    10. Replace the sound card with one you know is good.

Sorry, I thought this meant you were crying. LOL
I'm not that familiar with ME but I'll give it a shot.
It looks like your driver is intact, like I said before.
I'll just post a link for you to go through first. #6 in tutorial #2, looks like a good first step. But go through alll of them a nd try any that seem to be your problem.,

One thing that worked on my Vista recently (I lost my sound during a video card install) and may work for you. All I did was to right click on the driver, choose uninstall. Then, right click and scan for hardware changes.
    Also, Check: Speakers connected?
Check: Master Volume control. (not muted)
And last, sometimes, updatting your media player will solve the problem.

If none of those fixes helps, post back and we'll try a new driver install.

ME has a restore option like XP. Can you restore it to a date when the sound was working?

Did you mean, "Is the joystick the golum? I'm thinkink it might be.
This is what is in your Everest report:
The VIAUDIO is what makes me suspect that.

Try downloading and installing this Via Audio driver (It is for your chipset):
VIA AC97 codec incorporated into VT82C686A/B South Bridges
See if that solves your problem.

Like I mentioned before, I'm not familiar with ME. Try working through this attached file, especially the conflicts and other devices sections.
Make sure that you default audio device is the Via AC'97

It seems the Audio driver helped.
What does Device Manager say about the driver now?

    Verify software volume control settings:

    1. Open the Control panel
    2. Open the "Multimedia" icon.
    3. Check the checkbox for "Show volume control on the taskbar". If this section is grayed out, attempt to change the Playback "Preferred device" by clicking the down arrow and changing to an alternate selection. If that is also grayed out, skip to the next section of this document.
    4. If you were able to check this box, click ok and close out of this window and the Control Panel.
    5. Double-click the sound icon in the systray and verify that all the sound volumes are mid-way or higher.

    Verify the installed driver settings
    1. Open the Windows Device Manager
    2. Verify there are no conflicts or errors listed anywhere in Device Manager. If conflicts exist skip down to conflicts section.
    3. Verify no other devices are listed. If other devices are listed skip down to other devices section.
    4. Verify that your "Sound, video and game controllers" category is listed, if not skip down to the missing sound card section.
    5. If no conflicts or other devices are listed and your sound card is listed with no conflicts, skip to the next section.

    Conflicts section
If conflicts exists with your sound card and/or other devices installed in your computer it is likely that either the drivers are not properly installed for that device and/or the sound card and/or other devices are conflicting. If you open the properties of the device that is conflicting and view the properties, additional details about the conflict can be found. Additional information about error codes as well as help with Device Manager can be found on our Device Manager section.
If you are unable to locate additional information about your issue or are unable to resolve the issue, follow the below steps.
    1. Under Sound, Video and game controllers highlight each device and press the delete key to remove the device.
    2. Reboot the computer.
    3. As the computer is booting the system will detect the sound card and any of it's devices and re-install those devices. If prompted for a location of drivers, try pointing it to your sound card CD and/or your Windows CD. If this does not work or is unable to locate the proper files, you will need to get the latest sound drivers from your sound card manufacturer.

    Other devices section
If other devices are listed, it is possible that these other devices could be the sound card or other devices conflicting with the sound card. If any other devices are listed it is recommended you remove those devices, reboot the computer and let Windows redetect the devices.
If this does not work, attempt to determine which device is not being detected and resolve that issue first.
