No Sound

Hi everyone. My lovely son, has somehow managed to disable the sound. I have all the sounds for microsoft (i.e like when the computer opens up and shuts down) but when I go to listen to something on U Tube or windows media player the following message comes up:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

When I go Control panel> Sounds and devices> it shows "no audio device" and all the areas are greyed out.

Help...this has been driving me batty!

Go to Control Panel>Device Manager
See if there are any strange yellow or red symbols within the device list.
Double-click on Sound, video and game controllers and see if there are any sound devices listed (you may want to post them). Possibly your sound device is disabled or non-functional because of a bad driver.

You could try right-clicking on the list and scan for new hardware and maybe that will reinstall your "lost" sound device.

I checked the Device Manager and checked for hardware changes and also driver updates. The computer stated that there were no better drivers found.
I have the following under the Sound, Game and Video Controllers section

Audio Codecs
Lagacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Realtek AC'97 Audio
Video Codecs

Any other suggestions? I am getting a head ache but still have patience :banghead

 

Are you running XP or Vista?

Try uninstalling Realtek AC'97 Audio from Device Manager.

Restart computer. Windows should detect new hardware.
