No sound!

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 that I got from the mother-in-law over the weekend. She did a system recovery on it that I dont believe she did correctly. One of several problems I'm having with it is that there is no sound.

Troubleshooting and add harware just say everything is working properly. Volume control pops up a message that says 'There are no active mixer devices available.' Then it tells me to go 'Add Hardware'... which does not work. I tried searching for my sound driver at the Dell website, but the only thing that shows up on their search direction is Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device. Which my computer says is working properly...

Help please?

You might try a systems info tool to identify your hardware, such as http://www.majorgeeks.com/SIW_System_Info_d4387.html or http://www.majorgeeks.com/System_Spec_d4530.html ...

You might also try opening your case, and see if you can locate the actual audio IC on the sound card or motherboard (whichever you have)...if you can spot the name of the chip (Aureal, C-media, VIA, etc.), you may be able to locate some generic drivers...

Odd that you can't find drivers at Dell - did you try loading your Service Tag at the Dell support site?
