I wanted to install a game on my computer, but it said I could not because I had no audio card installed. My sound option in the bottom right corner said no audio output device was installed. I watched a youtube video for how to fix it, but when I tried to follow it, there was no "sound, audio and video game controllers" tab in my device manager. Someone please help me get my sound back. Thank you!

    Hi and Welcome

We will need more information in order to assist you with this, as while what you typed looks fine for what you are seeing on your PC for us we are flying blind so to speak, so need you to help us with as much info as possible.

1st check in your BIOS (when you boot your PC up look at the screen carefully it will flash up a key or set of keys to press to enter the BIOS/Setup, if it says Fn+F1 then the + means press both Fn and F1 together) once in the BIOS look for a setting for Onboard Audio, and make sure its set to enabled, then Save and Exit the BIOS. If you dont see any onboard Audio dont worry just Exit the BIOS and carry on below.

To start with please answer the questions below that are applicable and run the guide to gain an Everest log as written.

    What Game is it BTW?

I have no option for for onboard audio in BIOS. And my computer is a Windows Vista Compaq Presario F700 laptop. I do not want to install anything, though.

    Hi

    What is the Game?

In Device Manager (can find this by just typing Device Manager into the Start Search box) and do you have any yellow ! marks by any devices if so what are they?

Do you get sound from just playing a normal music CD or MP3?

I may not be able to assist you if not wishing to install anything I'm afraid, as you may need to install drivers etc to get audio working if its not as I mentioned playing music as above.

I have absolutely no sound, even from CD's or MP3's. The game I want to install is Fallout 3, and it says I need an audio card. Also, I have no yellow ! marks in device manager. Anything you can help me with at this point I'll be grateful for. Thank you.

    Hi

Sadly I need this information that the Everest log will produce, nothing personal is listed in the log, have a look at the text file before you attach it.

This log coupled with the now known Compaq PC will lead me to what we need to hopefully get your audio back.

Please also let me know if you have just had a malware (virus trojan) infection or what may have lead to no sound, new hardware install, new software install, all helps.

I did in-fact have a virus at one point, and we had to go through a long process to get rid of it. This happened right before I lost sound, so it might have had something to do with it, but I do not remember installing any new hardware at that time.

    Hi

What exact model Compaq Presario F700 do you have as there are 79 of them (majority with differeing specs and differing drivers) so need to know the exact model, should be on the base of the laptop on a sticker.

OR run the Auto Detect option at HP HERE (just click the Start Detection under this heading Or Automatically detect product names/numbers:)

and that should list your model and full version plus the drivers, Install the Chipset driver first then reboot, then install the Audio one and reboot then test audio.

The sticker on my computer's bottom says:
    Product: Presario F700
    s/n: CNF81571NP
    p/n: KP030UA#ABA
And after that is says F767NR
Also, I cannot find the chipset driver. If you could please put a link directly to page where you install chipset driver, I would appreciate it.

    Hi

All your drivers for the F767NR are HERE at Compaq/HP support for Windows Vista (as you didnt wish to post an Everest log I hada guess that you are using Vista 32bit over 64bit, so the drivers are for 32bit Windows Vista)

    The Chipset is HERE directly.

Did the drivers install OK or did they give any error messages at all?

Check in Services list that the Windows Audio Service is Started and its Startup type is set to Automatic, then in the same properties click the Dependancies tab and look donw the list of dependency services and then make sure all of those listed are set the same Started and Automatic and reboot and check audio.

You could try uninstalling/reinstalling your audio device through the device manager. It's possible whatever virus you had corrupted the audio drivers...

The driver installed okay. And jools, how do I go about doing what you said?

    Hi

Did you also check all the service dependencies that are in the Audio Service tab?

There is likey six of them to check that they are all running as above.

Just go into the device manager, expand 'sound, video and game controllers', right click on your audio driver and uninstall it. Once this is complete, go to the top left, and under the 'action' tab select 'scan for hardware changes'. Once it comes up, then reinstall the driver.
