No sound

    Hello
    I have no sound on my Pavilon desktop anymore. I did not knowingly remove it. Ran Microsoft Mr Fixit which said
    Low audio device volume
    Audio device muted.
    But all the indications from the control panel show the speakers to be fine and the audio device fine.
    The red cross shows against the speaker on the rule line of computer . I see no place where I can adjust the volume. Any ideas?
    I use Vista 32 bit SP1 ( cannot download 2 -won't run)
