I get no sound from my external speakers, and in device manager they are shown as a microphone. They were working perfectly, but suddenly quit. when I hit test, they respond nicely, but even though they are plugged in to the correct socket, my machine only seems to recognize the internal laptop speakers.

Full brand name and exact Model number of the speakers please.

Check that there is no visible damage or wear to the wires of those speakers or the socket on the laptop.

To establish whether the problem is with the external speakers, or the laptop, you will have to try the speakers on a different device.
You also ignored the question in my post.

What is happening is that when the speakers are plugged in, the laptop speakers continue to operate instead of switching to the external speakers.

Can you just confirm whether these external speakers ever did work correctly before this current problem?

Yes, they were working as recently as yesterday, and I have tried another set of speakers, same result.

If you look in your update history via:
settings > update and security > update history > then scroll down and open 'Driver Updates' and 'Other Updates'
to see if any changes have happened since this problem arose.

If another set of speakers is also not working, it's possible that the narrow shaped metal strip inside the socket is broken. This strip connects the external speakers and disconnects the internal speakers.
Look into the socket. Do you see something silver on the one side?

I have just noticed that when I press the test button for sounds, the speakers do work, so it is only audio from videos, music and websites that is not playing. Has to be a setting problem I would think; any suggestions, I'm stumped.

You'll have to look at the Settings of the Playback Devices in Windows.
Also look at the Settings of the Audio Control Panel - something may have changed due to an update.
