Hello. I am new here so I'm sure I will ask a couple of dumb questions. I bought the wife a new basic computer from Best Buy....Gateway 838Gm. I downloaded the AIDA32 like the forum said. The problem is I can't get any sound from the computer. Not being a computer guru I don't know what to do. The comp says it has the Intel Corp D915 GAG motherboard and Legacy Audio Driver. I dont see a sound card detected anywhere. Under control panel it says "No Audio Device" When I go to control panel under sound it says No Audio Device. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Gateway's page at <http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/102007/102007sp33.shtml> indicates that your sound subsystem is on your motherboard. There is no need for a separate sound card. If the drivers are properly installed, it may show in your Device Manager as "Realtek ALC860" or something like that.

Check your Device Manager. Make sure that no problem flags (yellow exclamation marks) are shown against the device. If no sound device is shown at all, check your BIOS settings to be sure that the sound subsystem hasn't been disabled.

You'll likely have a driver CD-ROM that was provided by Gateway for that machine. If the sound device is installed and is not showing a caution flag, uninstall it and restart your system so that Windows finds it and re-installs the drivers. Install the drivers from the CD-ROM. I doubt that "legacy driver" was the right choice for that one.

Check Device Manager for the presence of below
    System Devices;
Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator

if missing this is the root of the trouble

This is from an other post, yoo can Google 'plug and play software device enumerator' for more info, this might fix your sound trouble.

I came across a post(sorry, can't remember where...) that told me to make sure that my 'plug and play software device enumerator' was installed. AND IT wasn't! Installing it was kinda complicated and involved copy and pasting this:

    md \temp
    cd \temp
    copy %windir%\inf\machine.inf \temp\allmachine.inf
    copy %windir%\system32\drivers\swenum.sys \temp
    copy %windir%\system32\streamci.dll \temp notepad \temp\allmachine.inf

into cmd line and then opening the allmachine.inf with notepad and erasing what was on line 20(or so..)
    under the line [ControlFlags]

then adding new hardware through the control panel
    select pick a list
and click on have a disk
and choose the allmachine.inf file that is in the c:\temp folder
it will give you a new list of devices you can choose and the 'plug and play software device enumerator'
    install it
and then reinstall your soundcard drivers!
    done.

*please note* These are very general instuctions. They were laid out much clearer on another post. I wish I had the link for you but with this information I'm sure you'll find it if you look.
