No surround sound from Soundmax integrated

I have a new Dell dimension 4700 with the integrated soundmax 5.1 audio. I get no sound from the surround or center channels. The speakers are correctly connected and were tested on another system. The sound control panel IS set to 5.1 speakers. Am I missing something? Belarc Advisor report below:

first check every option related to your soundcard and make sure they are turned up,check volume control start>all programs>accessories>entertainment>volume control
Then look for a the name of your soundcard in start>all programs
Then control panel>sounds and audio devices also while your in there look for an icon related to your soundcard.

When you have checked these-Control panel>system>hardware>devicemanager and look for any yellow exclaimation marks,open the device that is your soundcard and check its status

 

Would you set them at 5.1 at Sound and audio devices already ?
Control pannel -> Sound and audio Devices-> advanced

 

All volume settings up, control panel set to 5.1, no problems in device mangler...hell i even made sure the BIOS settings were correct for onboard sound...still nada. The main channels and sub work fine, but nothing from the surround or center channels. I also made sure the fader on the speakers themselves was properly set. I don't geddit, and btw neither does Dell. they want to send a tech right off the bat so this makes me think it might be a known (although unpublished) issue.
