I am working on a older:

    Compaq Presario 6331rsh
    1.8 Ghz
    512M RAM
    XP Home Edition

System has worked as I upgraded her RAM around 8-10 months ago. Anywya, my prob is no Video. PSU seems fine as all fans work and drives light up including HD LED as it appears it is attempting to boot. I get no POST beeps. I tried removing the RAM to force a POST and nothing. I disconnected each drive one by one in case it was maybe a borderline PSU but to no avail.

Monitor is known good. I am thinking Mobo (factory one in there now) or CPU. I don't live in a location where I can just run down and get a vid card to try, but with no POST beeps I am leaning towards MOBO ?? ANy ideas on further troubleshooting ideas ?

Thanks in advance. You guys/gals have always been great !!

I had similar symptoms when my mobo died. What did you do that caused this to happen? Was it after you upgraded your RAM? Or was it just a random occurance? Try taking out all your PCI cards and disconnecting all your drives. If it boots, reconnect them one by one until you find the bad part. You could also try a CMOS reset; take out the mobo battery, wait a few minutes, then put it back in. Hope we can help :)

Random event that happened to her last week. I already removed all cards with no change and also tried removing the CMOS batt with no luck (forgot to mention that :) ) Thanks for the help.

dont think new mobos will fit in that case, thats what happens with most prebuilt systems like Dells, HPs, Sonys, etc. You could grab a new mobo and cheap case if ya wanna save the system if in fact the motherboard is dead. Cheap cases are easy to come by since your not going to be goin for snazziness as its just a home computer, that is, unless you WANT to go snazzy lol.

if the POST beeps aren't working either your internal speaker isn't properly connected or the motherboard is fried. So double check the internal speaker's wiring first, also does this motherboard have any LEDs ? Some do to indicate if they are working or not.

The last time I had this happen, the BIOS chip was bad. Unfortunately, only a few MB's allow you to replace the BIOS chip. Try to do some Google searches on the numbers from your MB that are between the PCI slots. This should tell you the exact MB and Brand you have. Then you should be able to find if the BIOS chip can be replaced.

Personally, I think I would either purchase a MB and case (which would also mean purchasing Memory and possibly a CPU because most older system's memory won't work in a new MB) or look for a Desktop on sights like Newegg or TigerDirect to find good deals on new computers.

    Good Luck!

you could just use an older mobo that uses the same socket and therefore keep the same memory and processor; thats what i did

I am having the exact same problem not getting video. I recently put together a new computer, Intel P4 3.0Ghz, 1 gig RAM, ECS P4M800PRO-M mobo, XP Pro. I turned it on, started going through BIOS and my power supply fries. I put a better PS in and now I get no video on startup. Do you think the old PS jacked up my mobo?

power supply directly feeds many things so it could've fried other things then the motherboard if not all, try removing the video card or ram and see if you get any Beeps out of the PC, if you do then the motherboard is fine.
