This is my first post so please be patient with a new idiot. I run a Gateway using the antique Windows 98 SE and Firefox browser. I run the slowest DSL .I can't play videos on Windows Player, Adobe Flash or Quicktime. I can't even get an e card to load! I got tired of Adobe reader due to the bulk. So I dumped it but re-loaded the Macromedia Flash Player. I do have a corrupted file in a PDF reader I downloaded and dumped that one too but there was a leftover file that would not go away. It's stuck in my program file. I also had a corrupted file in AVG so I dumped that, too. All heck broke out when I did that so I put the folder back without re-installing and things calmed down. I don't know a codec from my elbow. I have tried all sorts of diagnostics: scan disk, defrag, anti virus, reg cleaner and various repair programs. I need a plain language and hopefully not too complicated solution. Other than those two problems my puter runs fine. I can play video games, too. Please someone bail me out!:cry p.s. I can't afford to upgrade or get a new puter either. I be a poor person.:(

I don't have the answer you re looking for right at this moment but I think you should follow this link and perform this basic maintenance.
as far as your computer you may need to upgrade your ram. but since you are running 98 and you said your gateway was an antique I'm not sure how much upgrading you can do.
So hang on and check back someone should be along with a post to advise you on getting your video to play, and possibly getting rid of some of those rouge programs you are having problems with

Thanks. I downloaded one of the cleaners and a de-frag you suggested. Will let you know tomorrow if they helped.

For video try VLC player. It has all codecs built in so no need to add new ones. Or if you really prefer WMP you could download K-Lite Codec pack which will allow you to play most videos in WMP. [This is assuming that the problem is that you are missing codecs(video just won't start) not that your computer doesn't have enough CPU power to render them smoothly].

Foxit reader is a good fast alternative to Adobe Reader.

As to the leftover file from your reader you could try deleting it in safemode.

And if it was CCleaner that you downloaded go to Tools>Startup and see what is in the list. Look for remnants of Adobe or your PDF reader.

I might try the player you mentioned. I do have Foxit and really like it. I have Eusing reg cleaner and Doctor Alex and Avast also. I have the minimum start up programs and keep minimum stuff in my system tray. I have searched every where for pieces of dumped programs ( I have a find program under start menu, too) with no luck. Someone told to try system restore but I can not find that anywhere. I used the ccleaner and diskcleaner lite. Only difference they made is a tad more speed. Still no video nor cards. Is there somewhere I can get a restore program ( for free of course)? Thanks for your help so far.

I believe system restore arrived with the release of Windows ME so that isn't an option for you.

What happens when you try to view an Ecard? Try opening one in IE and see if you get an information bar at the top of the browser window.

Tried loading card on IE. No message, just blue screen where card should be with the Windows logo in upper left hand corner. Tried video too and nothing on any of my players. p.s. I believe my Gateway is 1999 model. That's the oldest file I could find.

I just tried to do a survey on a site I often use. Got a message that said I needed Adobe Flash Player. So i installed it (Version 9 as I can't download newer). Survey images still won't load. I have Adobe Player, Windows and Quicktime. No dice on any of them. But my boyfriend admitted he could play a video clip from a porn site (very much against my advice)using Quicktime . I clicked on tools, then error console. Found a bus load of them none of which I knew what the heck they refer to. Under warnings:unknown properties-filter,zoom,margin top, right, etc, display, expected declaration found but skipped to next declaration. Under warnings (at e card site) event not found and syntax error. Hope this info helps you to help me.:major

I suspected part of my problem lay with my java program. So I went to Sun Java and tried to get an update. Didn't quite work. Toward the end of installation I got a message a DLL file was missing. No idea which one or how find it. :confused

I think this is the version of Java for Win98 which version did you try?

Look in Control Panel>Add/Remove programs to see which version(s) you have installed.

Is this video/flash/java problem a sudden occurrence?

ive heard that the new adobe flash player wont work with 98 and there are some flash animations/movies that wont work with older versions...

if you are having file problems you might want to scan your hard drive for errors either with scan disk or a program from the hard drive manufacturer

If I remember right the problem was sort of sudden but I couldn't pin point exactly when. I loaded Sun Java 5 (my original version was way old) and Adobe Player 9. As I mentioned before toward the end of loading Java I saw the message download couldn't continue due a missing DLL, error #1723. So I checked their help site and they had lots of numbered errors but not the one I saw.(naturally) I have seen that particular message before when downloading Netcom3 Spyware Remover, also said "create process failed - code 31 a driver attached to system not functioning. The two places I download from is C-net and Zdnet. I hope this additional info puts you on the right track. If I can't fix this soon guess it's to the repair shop again after the holidays. I have run scan disk numerous times and de-frag,too. Also, I always check to make sure whatever I download works for Windows 98.

I have run several repair programs. Now sometimes I can play a video sent to my email and sometimes load E-cards :confused, just not consistently. My Power Point program works fine. Should I be looking for an Active X download? I am sure I still have a corrupted file and a missing DLL. Just don't which or where.
