    Hi Peter

Did this happen before the updates or after?

If after then look in your download history (type Windows Update in the Start Search box and then open Windows Update, then in the left menu click View Update History) for anything that was a driver update for Audio, if so please mention what it was?

Check Device Manager for any yellow ! marks and if you have any what are they?

But try this to start with HERE and run the Audio one, its in Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Troubleshooting (or type trouble into the start search box and its the top one) click Hardware and Sound > Playing Audio and click Next and follow the prompts.

If you do have any yellow ! marks in Device Manager on the Audio then may need to re-install the audio driver from Dell for your model.

Do also check the Audio properties that mute is not on and your playback device is speakers and not headphones.

    Hi D
I always like to be able to understand what goes on in my pc and peripherals so I can fix when broken.
Hp took control of my machine to configure ethernet for the new printer which was quite confusing to me as it looked as though the router settings were being worked on. He said the only settings altered were in the printer, not the router or pc. All I got out of the transfer from usb to ethernet was remote printing and apps I have no use for. I never print remotely and would just insert the usb cable if necessary.
Just after this happened the problem occured and they would not take responsibility for it.
I have made note of all of your trouble shooting steps just in case and which I really appreciate.
I have resolved the issue by using the troubleshooter. Therefore, I cannot be as specific as I would lke to be about the remedy which was 'fixed'.
Thank you again for the diagnostic tools.
I am weighing keeping the printer as it is which is functional, allows the laptop to print remotely etc or reset the router, printer to factory settings and reinstall the printer with just updated drivers and configure the router again. I would then use usb instead of ethernet. I don't like to lose too much security with wireless.
    Regards
    Peter
