No windows update

just formatted and re-loaded xphome. trying to go on microsoft for updates and it comes up with cannot find page cannot find server or dns error. i can get on various other sites no problem it just seems to be any site of microsoft. can anyone help. please.

 

Try going to it as a link instead of typing it in:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

tell me what happens.

you are using Internet Explorer, right?

when I click the above link while on firefox, I get the (usual) message about needing IE to access the site. (if I didn't need it for MS updates, I'd uninstall IE all together)

 

what really doesn't make sense is that you said you just wiped and reloaded, which means everything should be in a pretty generic state. If not for that, I'd check your hosts file to make sure ms sites aren't being redirected to nowhere. How are you connected to the internet? Do you have another system that's also conneectd through the same router or modem? If so, does it have a similar problem?
