Mall evacuated after worker starts fire trying to kill spider

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- A worker at a sporting goods store tried to kill a spider by burning it and ignited a fire that caused the evacuation of the mall where the store is located.

Police charged Joseph Freer, 23, Binghamton, with fourth-degree arson, a felony, following the fire late Wednesday afternoon at the Champs Sports store in the Oakdale Mall, 80 miles south of Syracuse near Binghamton.

Freer, an assistant manager, doused the spider with a flammable substance and then lit it, said Johnson City Police Capt. Ted Wido. The blaze quickly spread to merchandise in the storage area, eventually engulfing the storage area in flames.

There were no injuries. But smoke from the fire quickly filled the mall, forcing it to close for the day.

The Champs store sustained serious smoke and water damage, Wido said. Several other nearby stores had slight to moderate smoke and water damage, he said.

Well, it's hard to sell fishing rods with cobwebs all over them. Spiders do serve a useful purpose... outdoors.




Unless they're brown recluse or black widow, which we have down here. I terminate THOSE with extreme prejudice wherever I find them around my yard.

 

we have hulking great spiders here. an erachnaphobics nightmare. there not poisonous though. i think there 'cane' spiders, but i dont know how they got here or which part of the world they originated in.

I just killed a spider a few minutes ago, but it never occurred to me to use fire. I squished it with my shoe.

 

Yes I just use my shoe which always does a very thourough job of squashing a spyder. I concur on the honarable mention.

also, i applaud the guys determination to rid populated areas of our arachnid earthmates. as long as they stay out of site, fine with me. but i see one, depending on how scary it looks, i either run away or make sure that it is dead, and then i squish it with a tissue, and throw the tissue outside, just to be sure

 

talking about bloody spiders....the MOST ENORMOUS spider i EVER saw just came running out from behind the puter. i screamed (well of course) hubby who was asleep on the sofa woke up so fast he fell off. spider is now on the cieling looking down at us and it has a big egg sac. oh yuk yuk yuk....so after a short discussion where i tell hubby he cant squash it with a rolled up paper coz it will drop its babys he then goes the raid route. (to the enlish readers...raid is an insect spray) same result though.....spray said erachnoid and three millian little babys suddenly come running out and now there everywhere and im screaming and hubbys screaming and the dogs are barking. its like something outa faulty towers!! i hafta sign off now coz i dont think we got them all and im parenoid that daddy is gonna appear.

 

its at times like this i miss england!!!
