At least I think it's the CPU fan.

G'day All...this noise has been happening since nearly day one, and that was some 2 years ago.

The reason I think it's the cpu fan, is that when you scroll up and down a page with the wheel on the mouse, the is a distinct change in the level of the noise.

System works fine, but the longer it is on, the louder the noise becomes, especially in summer.

    Celeron 2.6.
    512 ram
    Windows XP home
    80G IDE hard drive

It does not have a case fan, only the cpu and power supply.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

i think the fans run faster when its gets hotter..like you said "especially in the summer" your computer needs venezlattion..turn on the air conditioner in the room with the computer when you run it
