    G'day guys

Just recently my CPU has been sounding like a chainsaw
    Very annoying..........
So today when I rebooted I gave it a kick (yes I know you shouldn't do that) and after a minute it calmed down and is now purring again......

So WHAT did I kick back into submission????

    Cheers
    XO

    Hi Wandaful.

Theres normally a simple explanation for for noises like that.

1: An untidy wire was touching the fan on your cpu. That would cause a pretty annoying noise. The 'kick' would probably have moved it away.

2: If you have a grill on your CPU Fan one or more of the screws might be loose causing it to resonate and make lots of noise (in this case a kick will only be a temporary solution)

3: The Fan on your CPU is broken (a missing blade or just dirty) in which case a 'kick' would probably have no effect.

Regardless of what has caused this I CANNOT recommend kicking it again should the noise return. However there are a few simple step you should probably follow anyway.

Every month or so power down you computer (completly.... from the wall socket (after shutting down properly)) and take the side off your computer and give it a hoover. Your be surprised the amount of dust that gets in the grills and fans. This prevents them from doing their job properly so they can't keep the computer as cool as they should.

Check all the wires are tidy and out the way, most cases will have clips on the side to keep them their, or you can just cable tie them together. this will keep them from interfering with any of the fans.

    Hope This Helps

    Matt

    No problems.

    Glad I could help.

Between us we will stamp out this abuse on poor innocent computers. ;)

I think Matt is onto it but it certainly wouldn't hurt to spend a couple of minutes and pull the rhs cover off and have a bit off a look. It may satisfy your curiosity, kicking will generally only lead to greater problems, generally.
