I have found an issue with Dell besides the obvious. I am updating a Dell 500 Mhz with 128 Meg of memory. the new system is an ABIT KV7 MoBo and an AMD 2900+ processor with 500 Meg of RAM.
Simply moving the HARD Drive found that the Win 98 SE system was required to have a DELL BIOS. I thought upgrading the system while residing in the Dell computer would clean the system and fix this error. It did not, Moving the HD to the ABIT allows the system to boot to the first Win 2000 screen then a blue screen of death appears with a inaccessible_boot_device error.
Moving the HD back to the Dell will allow an immediate boot no error of any kind. I have tried to seach the registry and the webb. Nothing appears other than possibel viris which is the case. Dell and MS has nothing. Any ideas on this would be most helpful

The change of motherboards will confuse the version of windows already installed, so you'll most likely have to reformat the HD, configured with the new components.

if you want to keep your info through the upgrade you could by windows xp upgrade edition, just make sure the previous os is in good condtion you should have no problems

I have only seen one time a change of MoBo confusing an OS.
This involved Windows 2000 Server. That is an NT issue not Windows 98.
Windows 98 isn't as finicky as Win 2K or NT. Somewhere Dell Windows 98 is calling a routine. Some wacky Dellism. Dell screws around with their hardware why not thei OS too? Years ago the only other issue I saw similar to this was whether you had on an 8088 computer or an original AT bios with BASICA versus Phoenix or AWARD bios SANS BASICA. The fix was to rename any program calling BASIC or GWBASIC as BASICA. This has to be something as simple as that is. I can rebuild the system faster than a 6 months moon walk trying to out think Dell.
    Thanks for the suggestion

I used an UPGRADE version of Win 2000. The problem is it has upgraded too much. It leaves the [call] looking for the DELL information whatever that is. The system runs perfectly on the Dell. When you move a motherboard and system as a whole the "worst" thing should be failed drivers for audio, video, system chip sets and modems. Never a complete non boot unless its NT or WIn 2000 then thats always a "hold your breath" until it gives you a desktop screen.
    Thanks for information.

Well guys I hate to eat crow, however in this business that can be daily. McAdam88 was close to the answer. Win 2000 doesn't like MoBo changes.
use the procedure describing mobo changes on this attached link. In short changing you ide controller to a generic driver will allow a boot. Once your in the system, detect and add the proper drivers through out. Many thanks to those that responded. I still do not like Dell. The original Dell bios error screwed up my thought train, but that doesn't take much.

It's not just Windows 2000 and has nothing to do with Dell.

Moving a hard drive from one system to another is almost guaranteed to either fail, or cause problems in the future.

You cannot take a drive out of one enviroment and place it in another and expect it to automatically function with incorrect drivers, Registry entries, hardware and settings, regardless of the operating system.

On top of that if it's XP you then have the added complication of Product Activation.

The basic rule of a new system is always to do a format and fresh install.
