nonexistant removable hd's appear in explorer

I'll try to be brief: my Dad's Acer PC had a trial version/beta of windows 7 installed. He didn't care for it, but didn't want to go back to vista (which comes on the restore cd). He prefers good old windows xp. So ok, we installed xp and scrounged around for what drivers we could find. It worked ok for the most part, the only thing weird is that he has a bunch of removable hard drives appearing that don't actually exist, like this:

Not sure what it could be...nothing strange appears in device manager.

 

Those are the various slots in his memory card reader.
