    Hello Major Geeks,

I am new to programming and sysadmin. My question is for informational purposes, in case you're wondering why i'm curious at my level.

The network at my school library has a "program" or script come up after you enter your login information. This is referred to as a 'login script' correct? The little program just lists the network rules and if you accept the terms or not. Accepting the terms allows you to log in, otherwise it doesn't. It's just one page box.

What would be used to write a little program like that one that defines the system rules? Would it be one of those in q or visual basic that you write in notepad? Or is a separate language program required to write that program?

I understand a script would be used to have it pop up everytime someone logs on, but what about the actual program?

Thanks, and sorry for my repetitiveness.

    1. I'm assuming you are logging onto a Windows OS computer.
    2. If so, is this "program" DOS based command prompt dialog box or a nice looking Windows Form?

When logging into a Windows environment, the Windows Form based program is actually a domain issue or local issued local policy setting.

Normally scripts are not used to list network rules and the above is utilized. scripts would be used to establish network drives, push down software to the computer, or even policy settings. This is just how I have experienced in various companies.

Thanks for the info. It is in fact windows xp home edition, and the form does not look like it is in a dos command window, but rather a nice looking windows form.

How do you access the windows form based program?

    Thanks again.

Check to see if the Local Security Settings has the pop up being activated.

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security Settings

From there go into Local Policies/Security Options/Interactive Login: Message text for users attempting to log on and see if that is where they have provided the information.

I am more inclined to think that they set the program up via this route and not a Windows Application. $.02

Thats not a login script. You dont actually see the login script function, only the effects. What youre seeing there is a legal notice caption defining the company network policies. its pushed out through group policy in a domain. login scripts sit in a folder on the DC c:\windows\sysvol\domain\scripts. The loginscript you wish to run can be applied to users profiles in properties on the Profile tab in AD.

Oh, my login scripts are written in VB.

You use group policy to define system rules.
