I downloaded Ubuntu and burned the iso to a CD and made certain that the disk was bootable. Now how to I install the OS? I have partitioned my disk and am going for a dual boot with XP already installed on the same disk.

    Which version did you download?

    7.04?

Is it a live CD? Put it in your CD drive and reboot your system. If you have a live disk, you will boot into Linux, and then on the desktop is an install icon.

Or................ if you have ethernet, you will be able to get online from the live system, sometimes a bit slower. If you have wireless, sometimes that takes some tweaking.

Yeah downloaded 6.061 (I think). I have rebooted the machine a lot now and nothing is happening. I have two CD drives, one of which I think is busted (location[0]), and have tried with the CD in both, to no avail.

6.06 had an install CD and also had a Live Optional CD.

If you put the CD in the drive, can you see any files with a File Explorer?

You may have a bad burn of the CD also.

I can see all the files in the explorer and I have also tried it in another machine and it booted fine, so the CD is ok, just can't boot from either of the CD/DVD drives on the machine I want to install it on. Is there any way I can begin the installation process from XP?

Yes. There are ways that you can install GNU/Linux from Microsoft Windows. Please look at the document here:

    install docs

Of course, its always good practice to back everything up first, and be advised that I have never done this kind of installation myself, so I cannot say how uneventful or "challenging" it can be.

In any event, good luck with your new adventures.

Have you made sure that your CD drive is in your boot order and listed before your hard drive?

I was just lucky in that regard, used IMGBurn for Puppy Linux with Verify turned on and had no problems. Tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, were just not my flavor I guess. Seems that quite a few things that didn't work well on this PC with Windows XP do work well with Linux. DVD no longer choppy and can play high bit rate music files w/o dragging down the operating system. I am using the live disk version now on a 1.3 GHz processor with 384MB of RAM, current RAM available is 185MB. Guess I should pull another 256 module out of an older machine and upgrade RAM to 512MB now, and not worry about Windows Update and the onboard graphics not liking the 512 max that this computer is rated for.

I haven't tried 6.06 but 7.04, after I partitioned my disk I left that partition raw and then let Ubuntu do it's thing making it's own partitions rather than doing it manually. I'm now triple booting XP/Vista/Ubuntu. Sorry for the flash in the pic.

EDIT: BTW, you will no longer see the Ubuntu partition from XP
