Nortin Internet Security causing hourglass

Exactly every 2 minutes my mouse pointer turns into an hourglass icon for 1-2 seconds and then goes back to regular mouse pointer (this is when I am sitting at desktop with no other programs running but NIS). I have a new computer from dell with the NIS on it. I disabled everything in my startup menu (run, msconfig, startup) and when I go to desktop it doesn't do it. As soon as I check the norton line in startup it does it again and that is why I believe it is NIS that is doing it. Do you have any idea why or how to fix.

    Hi TheOldThug

You could take a look at your processes in Task Manager and when the cursor changes see if any of the cpu usages jump.

Possibly NIS is doing some kind of check.

Does it have a 'keep alive' option making it ping a website every couple of minutes to stop your internet connection idling ?

Could be NIS checking for updates, I know they are big on that. Look in the Control Center for the LiveUpdate feature, see what kind of options you might have.

Can't I just use the uninstall under add/remove programs?

I will try that when I get home

Yes, but Norton products are notorious for not being removed completely by this method. Hence this tool. Using this should remove it completely, and hopefully give you less chance of a poor/failed re-installation. Clean slate.

Shouldn't Norton be ruinning in background and mouse pointer not change. it just that it is bugging the hell out of me. I just got the computer from dell and only problem I have that i would like to get resolved.

So do I use add/remove then this or just use this first?

Yes, you probably are correct. The mouse pointer will change to an hourglass in times where the system may be slow to respond due to high load (hence matt.chugg's suggestion to check task manger) Norton products are also known to consume alot of resources, and thus cause this problem (hence Matacumbie's suggestion to check options.) It could be that you can configure NIS to use less resources, but you would have to check the app's documentation.

I would use just the NRT, as this will have the same (albeit more thorough) effect as add/remove programs. It should not be listed in add/remove programs after you run the NRT.
